4.0 out of 5 starsmore exciting fun with the Athena Club
Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2019
This is the third book in the series about the “monstrous”—but very appealing—daughters (literal or figurative) of several famous fictional 19th-century villains: Mary Jekyll, Diana Hyde, Beatrice Rappacini, Catherine Moreau, and Justine Frankenstein. In the first book they met, became friends, and formed the Athena Club, living together in Mary’s London home under the watchful eye of housekeeper Mrs. Poole. They also got involved with Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and Jack the Ripper. In the second book they branched out into Europe, met Irene Adler and Count Dracula, and added Lucinda Van Helsing to their number. They’ve now returned home and set out on a new quest: to rescue Alice, their maid, who has proved to have “monster” powers of her own, and—oh, yes—Sherlock too: both have disappeared mysteriously and have probably been kidnapped. Predictably they run into Holmesian archvillain Moriarty in the process, but the most serious threat proves to come from elsewhere.

Like the other two books, this one is full of adventure, peril, and fun. All the young women are delightful (my favorite is the rapscallion Diana), and the best part of the book is the endearingly snarky dialogues among them that periodically interrupt the narrative. For some reason I couldn’t quite identify, this book didn’t seem to “zing” quite as much as the first two, but it was certainly enjoyable. I was thus saddened to read hints at the end suggesting that this would be the last of the Athena Club’s adventures. I do hope I’m wrong about that!

3.0 out of 5 starsFun continuation of the adventures

The monstrous gentlewomen are saving the world. Mummies, mesmerists, and murderers call the ladies to action. Our favorite characters journey across England and Cornwall to defeat the bad ‘uns and rescue their friends. The story isn’t quite as cohesive as the previous 2, but still a fun read.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Adventure of Growth
Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2019

This third novel in the Athena Club series sees Theodora Goss give her characters more substance beyond their backstories which were important in the first two books. Knowing all of the foibles, quirks, powers and limitations Mary and the Clubs members have made this read more about who they are, even Diana. Even the adventure itself was original as it did not depend on Holmes as a device to answer questions but, this time, was a device to help move the story along. It was good to see the growth of the characters find their voice and themselves, making the different circumstances encountered in London, Budapest and Cornwall more interesting and less dependent on Mary as the main protagonist and means to make things happen. Overall, a good read and I look forward to the next story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing premise, delightful tale

This whole series has been terrific, and this third installment is no exception. The books are based on the premise that many of fiction's notable male crazies (Dr. Moreau, Dr. Frankenstein, Dr. Jeckyll, etc.) had daughters on whom they experimented, creating "monstrous women." The books recount the adventures of these women as they try to make sense of what has been done to them, and to find meaning in sisterhood and in taking care of others in peril. Each book, including this one, involve complex plots in which someone is in peril. It would be a spoiler to name the notable in trouble in this book, however, as in all the books, much of the plot is related to real historical events. And other fictional characters including Sherlock Holmes make an appearance at crucial moments.

Some close reading is required, because there are enough characters that it can be hard to keep them all straight. But the effort will be well rewarded with excitement, humor, and appreciation of what is good in all of us.

This third (and hopefully not final) installment in Ms. Goss’ Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club is every bit as enjoyable as her previous two. Story arcs are tidied up satisfactorily, characters develop in interesting ways, and there are still a few dangling threads left by which Ms. Goss might craft a fourth novel. Very entertaining + well worth reading...don’t miss it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book this book more than the first two because now all of the characters were introduced and it was strictly an adventure story.

I am sorry that there will not be any more of this series; just when I know who all the characters are the series has ended. There seemed to be some hope that the enemy queen might come back but I think the author did a fine job of incorporating most of the female "monsters" into the story. However if there is another book, I really would not like to see Diana again! She was so annoying and rude to everyone.

I just finished this book recently and I couldn't put it down. I loved this book. I have been waiting for this book ever since I read the cliffhanger ending of European travel for the monstrous gentlewomen. I was not disappointed with this book. This book took me on a wild adventure and we get to see what's going on with all the characters. I wish I could say more, but that would lead me into spoiler territory. I just want to say this was a great novel and I highly recommend this.

I recommend this series to my one who likes good tales of strong, smart, capable women. It was fun to get lost in the world of the Athena club. Great individual characters, and I especially liked how the narrative interrupted itself to tell a larger story. Both the print and audible versions are 5 star!

This is the 3rd book in a trilogy so be warned. It really is necessary to read the first two novels. If you have done that, you don’t need me to recite the basic stories and circumstances. I felt this book went on a bit longer than the first two but was still a fun and fascinating journey. Read the earlier books and I promise you, you will want to read this one.

A deeply satisfying conclusion to the arc of the trilogy (though I hope we haven't seen the last of the Athena Club), though it can absolutely be read on its own. These books are perfect comfort reading with a cozy cup of tea. If you're into Gothic novels (who isn't?), the many allusions will delight you. I also appreciated the gentle humor of Goss's characters, especially in the present-day dialogue sections. Warning: the beautiful descriptions of pastries may induce baking.

Sometimes a book, or in this case a series, leaves you wanting more of the same. Such is the case with Theodora Goss' the Adventures of the Athena Club. Since I knew this is the last book of the series, I almost didn't want to finish reading it, but, of course, I could not help myself. I hope that sometime in the future Ms. Goss decides to write another, but that is probably wishful thinking. For anyone who likes mystery novels, start with the "The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter" and read the entire series of 3 books. You'll be glad you did.
