5.0 out of 5 starsSolid Anthology and Fun to Read.
Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2019
Noir Fatale is a solid anthology and fun to read. I was at the panel discussion at LibertyCon that one of the editors mentions in her introduction. I like the varied settings that the stories took place in. From World War II, to the future, the Moon, Toyoko, an alternate history Russia, and other places. All the stories are very good. I have read some of David Weber’s books and felt his story in the collection was the best fiction I have read by him. For some reason, I seem more drawn to the stories featuring detectives. So I really liked Ain’t No Sunshine by Chris Smith and Michael Ferguson, the Easy Rawlins reference I thought was a nice touch. Spoils of War by Kacey Ezell I found very appealing, and would like a follow up novel where Ray Martel searches for Nina LaFleur. I found the non-traditional detectives featured in Steve Diamond and Hinkley Correia stories very entertaining. This is the first time I have read anything by Patrick Tracy and plan to look for more of their fiction. I really liked Larry Correia’s Grimnoir Chronicles, the closing story in the book is set in that Universe and held up to the orignal series. Fans of that series should love this story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful set of short stories
Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2019

OK, let's get this out of the way. Yes, these are short stories. Yes, many (if not all) of them are set in different "universes" created by the various authors. Finally, the stories in this book focus (or include) the femme fatale archetype; with all the stories taking place in a noir-ish setting sprinkled with science fiction and magic.

If none of these float your metaphorical boat, then consider yourself warned. If you have a love of noir, magic, and/or science fiction then you will likely enjoy this book and probably love at least one of the stories. Speaking only for myself, I enjoyed all of the stories, though I particularly enjoyed Ice Queen and Kuro. There is also an excellent story by Larry Corriea set in the Grimnoir setting -- which I love but found frustrating as I now want "more" stories in that setting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Science Fiction & Fantasy Mixed with Noire Styling
Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2019

Overview – Noire Fatale is a collection of 13 short stories mostly written with a noire style belonging into a science fiction or fantasy genres. Tough guys --- femme fatales are a common element in most of these stories. Some of the most prominent science fiction and fantasy writers are represented – Davis Weber, Sarah Hoyt, and Larry Correia. Even better – there are some less famous authors that contributed very solid stories. Most of the stories work – a major accomplishment for any short story collection.

Collections of short stories are hard to curate. When you combine noire and science fiction/fantasy, it is far more difficult. Noire is a style – everyone is familiar with post-world war II Los Angeles for instance. In fantasy and science fiction, the author needs to setup their universe and its rules – elevate the noire style – all within 20 or 30 pages. It is surprising that Noire Fatale managed to put together a generally solid collection. Recommended.

The Good – Some of the less famous authors wrote the best stories – especially since most of them have to craft the rules of their universe. Steve Diamond’s The Privileges of Violence is a true standout – a story that combines of horror combined with a fictionalized communist Russia. I hope Steve Diamond writes a full book in that universe.

The Bad – Most of the famous authors attempted to write their contributions to Noire Fatale in their preexisting universes. Kind of disappointing since it gives them a leg-up from their less famous counterparts. In general, I found the stories by these authors less engaging with the exception of Larry Correlia’s contribution. Since his Grimnoir Chronicles are basically noire already, a side-story was more than natural and welcome. It seems that some of these authors saved their best writing for their own books and not this one. These weaker stories are a minority of those present in this book – a minor criticism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Collection of Short Stories!

Larry Correia and Kacey Ezell managed to get a broad array of sci-fi and fantasy authors to contribute works focused on the femme fatale--resulting in very different approaches and unique stories. The amazing thing is that all of the contributors not only met the objective in very entertaining ways but also exceeded expectations. Even Larry's daughter Hinkley proved that writing well definitely runs in the Correia family. I can only hope that Larry and Kacey team up again as the result this time was well worth the money. You will not be disappointed by this book!

Maltese Falcon meets Magic and mayhem. Great mix of stories, and genres, under the guiding theme of "Noir Femme Fatales". I thoroughly enjoyed 12 of the stories. Thanks to their contributions, I have a few new Authors to watch and read. Also, very cool that some of my favorites giving us a new pieces, from established universes, to show their writing chops. Kudos to David Weber for letting us dive into "street level" in the "Honorverse". And thanks to Larry Correia for letting us walk the streets of the Grimnoir again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mostly Awesome

I say "mostly awesome" because two of the stories just struck me, personally, as unreadable schlock, but your mileage may (and probably will) vary. That's the beauty of a collection like this: even though two (TWO) stories were unbearable (for me) the other stories were magical, wonderful, wildly entertaining. I very much enjoyed this collection, and I would recommend it to any fan of sci-fi, fantasy, or mystery.

Some very good stories here. Interesting to see familiar authors and characters in a slightly new style, and a good way to meet less familiar ones. Space Noir worked better than expected. A few stories didn't do as good a job of evoking a noir feel, always an issue with "themed" anthologies. High Fantasy seemed especially ill-suited for this.

Another wonderful anthology co-helmed by Correia. Some tales are more noir than others, but they are all fun reads. Buy it.
