PIPPA: I know you're out there. I know you'll read this. I just wanted to take a personal moment to thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for writing another book in this series.
Caleb and One are back!! YES!! This is by far my favorite series by Pippa DaCosta. I missed this family and I'm glad they're back.
Caleb and One are my favorite couple and I wanted to see them come together with fireworks exploding.
Deliverance picks up a few months later where we left off with book 4. Caleb has to pull himself together and go search for his missing brother, Bren. There are a whole bunch of familiar faces and one new. This story is jammed packed with all the action and spacey stuff. You know I can't wait till the next book, but I understand I must learn the patient ways of a Jedi, because of writing details and such.
Best to read the entire series in order as the stories all connect to each other. The last book left us knowing that One survived, but Caleb didn't know it and I was thrilled to see the series continue. They're BACCCK! Caleb is back in the black, pulling himself together after losing One and his 2nd mate Fran is consorting with Turner Candelario a space pirate, or is she? They thought they stopped Chitec and Chen Hung , but surprise, they discover a bigger threat. Caleb has to find his missing brother and both have huge bounties on their heads so everyone is after them. The book switches back and forth between Caleb and One who has her own problems being a Synth and keeping control of herself. Love the interactions between the characters and the action is non-stop. You can tell the main characters have known each other and have a colorful history between them. Caleb gets out of tight situations always skirting the law. No cliff hangers, but the story continues onto the next book.
Changed by the climactic events of Book 4 and the apparent demise of One, Caleb's trying to be a (slightly) better man. But the rest of the galaxy has other ideas, and he can't outrun his past - the mistakes or the heroism. Luckily, he's got Fran to deviously watch his back and sort-of-mostly rescue him.
Meanwhile, One's careful exploration of her growing...I hesitate to say "humanity," so we'll go with "soul"...leads her to uncover an ominous conspiracy rising from the ashes of Chitec, Hung and the 1000, and sends her and Caleb on a collision course with one another yet again. As it should be, because they're the only ones who will ever be able to redeem each other.
She's baaack!! One, yes that One, 1001 to be precise, has returned in a new tale that would be the beginning of Three new stories about the 1000 Revolution. Applied Alert! One didn't die in the black. Well, her robotic Android body may have frozen in space but if you're One, the one more than a thousand androids than are supposed to exist, uploaded her being to the cloud and downloaded herself to an identical shell. Is she the same? She looks sort of but not really different than before. Why didn't she tell Captain Shepard she didn't die? She should have because now that she's caught and on the operating table her processes may never be the same.
Now I'm already dying for the next book! I love these characters. Caleb and Fran certainly have an "it's complicated" relationship. Maybe they can learn to be friends???
This is a short book and the action never stops, fleeing and fighting is the way of life in the black. I felt the ending was a little rushed but it was obviously the set up for the new series. What actually happened to the little girl? Will Caleb ever stop resenting Bren?
But mostly, I wonder how Caleb and One can ever really be together". She could live forever and he is painfully "only human". Will they end with him uploading into an android body? Or will One ultimately be the "loneliest number"?
At first I had a bit of a problem getting back to this world. After all I had made my peace with the ending of the original series. But after a few snarky comments from Fran and Caleb being the a@@ we all love I was fully immersed into the book. It felt like coming home and I couldn't be happier.
The story promises to be even more interesting and with higher stakes than before. No good deed goes unpunished and Caleb and One will have to deal with a ghost from the past that wants to reshape the Nine Systems into a synthetic's dream. And I can't wait to embark on the next stage of this journey!
After I read the first 4 books in this series, I went back to the beginning and read them all again. They contain some of the most interesting characters and some of the most compelling stories I have ever read. At the end of the 4th book I felt that the series had come to a very satisfying conclusion, but I was thrilled to discover that there was a 5th book. I had no idea how DeCosta could possibly continue the story, but she has found a way and it is stunning. Eagerly looking forward to book 6!
Love all the books, and I reread them all every year. I only do that with the classics, and my favorite authors. Great characters that you fall in love with. If you love stories with adventure, romance, lust, and laughter, this is for you.
Great news is there will be more on the way, I can't wait!!
Can't keep a good fixer down right? Caleb returns to captaining his dysfunctional crew of two while hunting for Bren and fighting through panic attacks. One chases down a mystery on Empire Island. And the Cande pirates keep doing what they do best. They're back in black!
Overall, this felt right. It was great to be with Caleb and his crew again. Much more and I'll spoil all the fun.
