Fantastic characters and dynamic new world
Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2019
Having never read either of the authors before, I wasn't sure what to expect. The three book deal showed up somewhere and I went for it.
Nothing has been disappointing. The development of the characters and scope of the world are constructed well. Descriptions of details are high marks as well. There are nuances that make it seem real that you simply don't see often enough in fiction, but are common throughout the series.
Generally, it's a family friendly series. The profanity is changed enough to feel safe. The sexual references are mostly safe as well, gradually becoming more descriptive with each book, but never risky (I just started book four, which may have stepped over that line a bit).
The way the story is put together, from different perspectives, adds to the reader's inability to put the book down. It made me read this faster than I would have preferred.
Some of the responses of the characters at times seemed a bit overdone. Torsten's explosive and sometimes utterly unreasonable temper is an example. He seems so solid, wise and insightful in one scene, then the next one he blows his cool in epic fashion. There were a few other incidents that seemed a little too much, but they were only slightly distracting.
Editing is generally very good. The books probably have less than the typical number of typos. It's not distracting and most of them will probably be missed by readers, especially since the story is so engaging.
I look forward to more from Bruno and Castle, and will probably go check out their other creations after enjoying these so much. Thanks for sharing your adventure with us, guys.
