Book review for: “Listening to My Feelings”
Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2019
“Josh was usually a well behaved boy...” so starts this book about listening to my feelings geared for children ages 3-5.
This book deals with Josh and the different feelings that he has. He struggles with sharing his toys with his sister Emma. He shouts at her, tries to pull the toy away from her, next pushing and hitting her!
How does Josh feel about his behavior? He is crying, feels sad and is sorry. He describes this to his mother and how he felt like he would explode.
His mother is very understanding about Josh feeling the feelings that he has. It is always OK to feel your feelings!
All children go through periods of behaving badly but it does not mean they are bad children. Josh’s mother talks about doing the right thing.
How can Joshua make his bad feelings go away? He can do some breathing exercises, he can dance, sing and give hugs instead! He can put his bad feelings into a pretend ball and squeeze them all up tight and throw them far away!
Talking about feelings and learning what is inappropriate lays the groundwork to learning to manage feelings. The book outlines the appropriate ways to deal with feelings in a very clear and concise manner. The example of the brother and sister is a good one. I like how the mother intervenes and is supportive.
