Couldn't get past the first page

I ordered this for a 10 year old boy relative, began to scan it to make sure it would be OK before wrapping it, and encountered this description of the young hero:
"Jason Albert Pascall stared at his reflection in the bathroom mirror while listening to his favorite rock band Lightning Strikes. He styled his hair into a perfect mess using a touch of gel, then frowned at the hint of a pimple on his chin."
Sounded so "today" in not a good way, that I went no further. Am returning this book, and ordering 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, a timeless classic, instead. I don't recall Jules Verne trying to ingratiate himself with his readers by petty trivia like the latest dumb hair style aped by his protagonists.
