Unique Sci-Fi Fantasy...which apparently, is only the first in a series

Although I enjoyed this book, I am resentful that the current description (at this time) doesn't mention that it is not a complete story. A "Book One" or "Trilogy" or something of the kind in the title would have been informative. I, for one, am currently involved with more series than I care to be at this time, so I likely would have selected a different First Reads offer.
However, I did enjoy this World and its characters. It is a lengthy book, which is very helpful for a first book of a series. There are several major characters, all of which are nicely developed. These characters revolve and interact around the main character, Salo. Their independent life histories are well drawn. The action scenes are detailed well. This is a world of Magic and Tech. There are fascinating creatures that are a combination of animal and machine. The Tribal politics are intriguing.
My main complaint (other than the ending leaving me hanging) is the lack of clarity concerning the how and why of the World. I wanted more background and history. The reader only gathers snippets of information as the story progresses--which is obviously deliberate. Because near the end of this book, there is mention of an event that happened thousands of years prior-- the "Great Forgetting". Unlike some readers, I'm not overly fond of this method for World Building.
Nicely written and an interesting World. But, although I may read the next book....I'm not overly driven to do so.
