I started reading this story knowing nothing about the author

I have made it halfway through The Earthling (Soldiers of Earthrise Book 1) and I am undecided if I'm going to continue or bail out. Odds favor me bailing out. This book is an amalgam of the Vietnam war, Full metal Jacket, and Avatar, so far I haven't I haven't encountered an original idea other than locating Vietnam on an Avatar-type planet orbiting a star out in the galaxy somewhere. I did like the first few chapters with the Symphonic metal rock group and at that point I had high hopes, but alas this read turned into a hard slog just like the Ho Chi Minh - oh sorry, I mean the Freedom Trail. I have given this effort 2 stars (rather than less) because of the first few chapters, and it is well written, grammatically correct, and with no typos that I have seen.
EDIT: I decided to finish reading The Earthling (Soldiers of Earthrise Book 1) but I have confirmed my original opinion: it's a rehash of everything made public about the Vietnam war mixed up with Full Metal Jacket and Avatar. Maybe readers who know nothing about the Vietnam war, and haven't read anything about it will see this as new, original material. I thought about raising my two star rating to three but in the end decided nothing in the second half of the book rated that.
