I have read over 500 post apocalyptic novels, and this one rates in the C category. The "5" ratings are undoubtedly women who like to read gothic romance novels with a little action.
TL Payne is a woman author, and the writing shows. Lots of emotion, romance, skimming over the action, and too much unnecessary, lovey-dovey dialog. Too much vulgar, cuss words used, even by young people. The covers are all the same, showing the backside of a young woman. Hmm.
The chief protagonist, Maddie, is an 18 year old girl who is headstrong, hot-headed, emotional and immature, whom the author attributes an unrealistic amount of tactical expertise and knowledge, for the sake of moving the plot along, I guess. She is a "know-it-all." Her 15 year old brother Zach is much the same. I didn't like her.
There are a lot of dumb suppositions by the characters and unrealistic suspense. Author should have developed and described the characters in much more depth so readers could picture the names with a person. Too much action is glossed over because the author is unfamiliar with armed combat. Some of the action is suicidal. She should stick with gothic romances. I doubt I will buy the next one, as I had a hard time finishing this one. .
