Toddler Loves it and So do We! (Just wish it was available in a board book!)
Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2019
We pre-ordered this because we are obsessed the Nancy Tillman's books. This book arrived last night, and our daughter saw us remove it from the Amazon box and proclaimed, "have it, have it, have it, pleeeeeease." She asked us to read it several times and it's wonderful. If I had to describe it, I'd say it speaks a story of positive thinking and encouragement - a beautiful message - while using illustrations beautifully referencing beloved fairy tales and nursery rhymes such as Jack & the Beanstalk, Three Little Pigs, Snow White, Goldilocks and The Three Bears, and The Cat and The Fiddle (specifically, The Cow Jumped Over the Moon.) I also feel the children in this particular book gain additional realism. The illustrations are incredible (see screenshots), the story is short and sweet (with only one page I feel is a little lengthy, which struggles to keep our young daughter's attention), the rhymes cute and memorable and the messaging lovely.
For context, our daughter is 2 years old (25-months) and she requests Nancy Tillman's books on a daily basis. We LOVE all her books, though our personal favorite is probably "Wherever You Are, My Love Will Find You." So, if you're looking for additional books for your library, check out that one. Oddly, we like (but don't love) "On the Night You Were Born," which is the book which earned her tremendous praise as a New York Times Best Seller. It's a very good book, but for some reason (personal view), many of her other books resonate more deeply with my husband and myself. Still, worth buying, but I recommend "Wherever You Are, My Love Will Find You," "The Crown On Your Head", and "I'd Know You Anywhere, My Love" as our top three. It might also be worth noting, since our daughter is so young, we have a bias for books which are available in board format (which this is not yet, nor was "Heaven Of Animals.")
The only item we disliked from this author/illustrator was the Wonderland Collection; however, only because the books were tiny and basically just reprints and excerpts from Nancy's other books (which we didn't expect when we ordered.)
As a new book and someone who loves encouraging reading with little ones, and someone who loves Nancy Tillman, I'm hoping my story and insights can help others in deciding if this is right for them. In the meantime, I'll keep an eye out for a board book version (hint! hint! - to the publishers). I hope this helps! Enjoy!
