5.0 out of 5 starsCan't wait for the next intallment!

A great short story! This prequel leads into the next full novel in February. For anyone who has not read any of the other books in the series, this novella introduces all the main characters so you have a great starting point. The story is centered on the death of a barmaid named “Irish Nell” of the title and a moral decision made by Stephen Lavender that has long term implications. It also exposes the inequality if justice for the poor during the time period.
Ms. Charlton has done excellent research and the characters are well written and relationships are believable. I have read all of the Detective Lavender books and am looking forward to the next installment. I recommend all the books in this series.

Well written, clever, interesting. So why only 3 stars? This is so very short. It simply sets up the full length book which will come out in a few months. I enjoyed the ministory but can't give it full review points. I'm looking forward to Lavender stories at whatever length.

I chose this rating because all of your books 📚 deserve it and more!!! This books deserved (well the next book will be the same after I read it next) all and any new ones! You are by far on my top five favorite Authors list, and your books are by far the greatest reads ever! I have a fascination with your characters, they are so relateable. I am so into the stories that it is impossible to set them down. I have to finish from start to end and can get pretty scary if interrupted! Love, love, love 💘 all your stories. Thanks for sharing your awesome talent! Never stop writing, it would hurt me badly if you did and at 71 yrs of age that would be major! Be well and thank you again for the time I get to spend reading your books.

I've always been fascinated by the relationship between the posh Stephen Lavender and his never-posh underling Ned Woods and Ned's family. "Irish Nell" is yet another glimpse into the bonds they share. Well done, Karen, for finding a most clever way to validate your editor's long-time feeling that Ned's wife Betsy *did* know something about Lavender that Ned didn't! Looking forward to the next full-length Lavender-Woods tale I pre-ordered months ago!

5.0 out of 5 stars Short But Good

I have come to love this series-both the full-length novels as well as the short stories-and this was no exception. Lavender and Woods never disappoint. Short though it is, it is an interrsting and well-written story, in addition, this short story provides a bit of background and context for "The Willow Marsh Murder. So if you plan on reading that one(I just started it today),you might want to read this first. And of course, I highly recommend this one to anyone who loves a good historical mystery, as well as those who have read the other installments in this series.

What a great little short story! Having read all of the Detective Lavender books and eagerly anticipating the next one in February, this prequel introduces nearly all of our favorite characters when they were just getting started. Ms. Charlton’s character development is always spot on and this story is no exception. You come to know the individuals’ personalities, foibles and even their appearance. A difficult moral dilemma is introduced in “Irish Nell” (isn’t that a lyrical title?) that we trust will be explored in the new book. A fast but satisfying read, order this novella!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Irish Nell Murder Haunts Detective Lavender Later in His Career

One of the first cases to be handled by Detective Lavender and his partner Constable Ned Woods. Indicative of the justice system of the early 1800s, this story showcases the insurmountable obstacles that the Police had to overcome to bring a satisfying outcome to the investigation into the brutal murder of a "common" girl perpetrated by a "gentleman" of means.

4.0 out of 5 stars Detective Lavender

The set up for the next Detective Lavender is excellent if a bit difficult to read. By difficult, I mean the description of the crime is not for the faint of heart. It is gritty realism. That having been said, it was wonderful to read of the early exploits of Lavender and Woods, to see how their personalities and partnership develop. I am eager for The Willow Marsh Murder. The first chapter is available at the end of this novella.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the series

This short story is a prequel to the Willow Marsh Murder. This story takes back ten years prior to the current timeline in which Detective Lavender did something wrong for all the right reasons, avenging the murder of a young women. Sergeant Woods knows nothing about this incident, but his wife does. How this effects Stephen and Ned's relationship is revealed in the next book.

This is the fourth Detective Lavender book I’ve read and loved it. Beautifully woven together plot that ended well. I have enjoyed this series immensely and learning about the historical period is amazing. If you want a good English detective story pick any of the series and you’ll want more and more.
