5.0 out of 5 starsThe perfect carry-on!
Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2018
TL;DR version -- TravelPro makes bags meant to work and live out of. This is no different and fixes three complaints I had about my old Maxlite (2 or 3?):

- The front now has a slant so it doesn't become top-heavy and fall over when fully packed or with your personal bag
- The side carry handle is amazing and 10x more comfortable for getting up and down the airplane
- The soft, rubbery handle peels on the old model and has now been replaced with plain old hard plastic

DO NOTE! There are 2 versions of this bag 21" (international) and 22". They are noticeably different in capacity. If you have a 22" and fill it to the brim, you won't want this version.

Overall, fantastic bag with an incredible warranty. You'll tire of it before you wear it out.

More Context --

As a consultant, I live out of carry-ons (as much as it pains me to type that). When I started traveling heavily about 5-6 years ago, I started paying attention to the frequent travelers and crew members' brands of choice. It was no contest - TravelPro dominated. I picked up the MaxLite 2 or 3 which has taken every bit of abuse I could throw at it over the years with very few complaints beyond what I listed above.

First, I really wanted to point out the size difference. I came from the 1" bigger version and between that and this bag's new "slant", you lose a day's worth of clothes. I can find ways to recover that space because -- for me -- the smaller size of this suitcase fits into the regional / commuter jets I must often take to get back home to Cleveland. However, if you're the type to pack carry-ons full and never take regional jets, you might consider the slightly bigger version.

As light as the old bag is, this one's even lighter. Impossibly light, actually, and it was the first thing I noticed about it. Between that and the 'packing diet' I had to put myself on, it was actually quite pleasant and easy to hoist into the overhead. Beyond that, I cannot speak highly enough of the perpendicular handle. This is one of those silly things that has you immediately wondering "why has no one thought of this before" because your wrist will thank you every time you get on and off a plane.

Beyond that, I have always had a spinner bag and would never go back. It's nice to push the bag through terminals and take the strain off of your arms during longer walks between terminals. These wheels seems easier to get to as well for if/when they get a bit gummed up and need to be cleaned and oiled.

In all, it's a no-frills, professional, ready-for-anything carry-on you'll be happy to own. I really appreciate the new pattern on the interior of the bag as well. In a world of boring greys and blacks, it's nice to see a splash of color when you open it :-)

In sum, TravelPro knows what they're doing when it comes to luggage. This is a rugged, well-built, thoughtfully-executed carry-on you'll be happy to have and own. I'm 100% confident it's ready to work for years to come and, if you do manage to break it, Travelpro backs it with a lifetime guarantee. There's no point in buying some of the ones that cost 2-3x more than these, I literally can't think of anything they could do better. I have been, and will continue to be, a TravelPro fan for life.

I have uploaded two pictures of it next to the bag its replacing to get a feel for how it compares. It's also worth noticing how good of shape the old one is in after about 5 years of use and a ridiculous amount of travel (easily a couple hundred). In the closed picture, this bag has the perpendicular handle and colored "TRAVELPRO". In the open picture, this bag has the nice colored interior and the old one is grey.

I received this through the Amazon Vine program. If you have found it helpful, please let me know!

3.0 out of 5 starsQuality bag that’s light and easy to maneuver, but the tipping issue ruins it.
Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2019
I needed a carry on for Europe. Our family of 6 embarked on a three week, 6 city adventure. Lots of trains and planes, stairs and cobbled streets in the rain. This bag held up great. I bought this bag because I didn’t want to worry about any size issues and end up having to check my bag. I also wanted a light bag and this bag hit the mark on both of those items. It is verblight weight and the size is perfect! I was able to expand it while I went on the trip and added keepsakes as we traveled. I love the color too! The rollers and zippers are quality and the handle worked perfectly as well. I didn’t get stuck once. It held up nicely, but this thing tipped over ALL-THE-TIME!! I even bought some stones at a market for gifts(quarts, crystals and others), they weighed about 5 lbs and I strategically placed then in the bottom back of the bag with other heaver items like my boots in hopes it would help and still it would tip! It was less times, but it still tipped!! We had a running joke about my bag as a family because it was the only one that did this and it was throughout the trip. I had to make sure it was always leaning against something when I was in the restroom, restaurant or checking my phone for ticket information. I ended up straddling it for moment stops when I had to take my hand off the handle to grab a coffee or water or whatever. As much as I love all the other qualities of the bag, the tipping issue has clouded the positive qualities. I will be shopping for another bag, even though this one is still in good condition. It was inconvenient for all of us.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bag is much deeper than described. Returning for refund.

Size: Checked-Large 29-InchColor: BurgundyVerified Purchase
First off, I love Travelpro luggage. However, this bag is deeper than the description. It states 13 inches deep overall, but it is nearly 15 inches when I measured it. Most airlines allow a maximum of 62 inches total for checked luggage otherwise it is considered 'oversized' and incurs a large fee (United Airlines is $200 for oversized.) My previous bag (RIP old Travelpro bag) was the same dimensions as this one advertised at 65 inches total and the agents always let me slide stating 'if it were any bigger, I would have to charge you.' Well, this is 2 inches bigger and I don't want to risk the $200 additional fee per leg. Also, while the bag arrived on time and undamaged, the bag had no tags and came only with the registration form and the plastic name tag. While this is not something I would solely return an item for, I thought I would mention it here. It did smell brand new and did not have any wear, but I remember my last Travelpro arriving with more packaging (but that was years ago since these bags last FOREVER, so maybe that has changed over the years.) I'm returning it for a refund and shopping for something that advertises smaller dimensions and hope the actual depth keeps me in the normal checked luggage sweet spot.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty but not practical

This suitcase is ENORMOUS and even at not quite 100% full (of just clothes and shoes), and even without opening the expander, it clocked in at over 80 pounds when I went to check in. Multiple people on my journey commented that it was the biggest suitcase they’d ever seen. It’s difficult to maneuver. It’s just too big for normal travel, unless you fill it just partway, and then everything just slumps to the bottom and gets wrinkled. I recommend the 25” instead.

2.0 out of 5 stars Exterior dimensions are inaccurate

Smaller than advertised; for comparison my old bag which is also Travelpro and also advertised at 22 x 14 x 9.

This bag is only 21 inches tall, 8 inches 13 across and while the 9 is accurate at the bottom - it is sharply tapered and an inch less at the top Plus it doesn't expand as well as the old. Overall probably holds 25% less than what I thought was the same sized bag.

It does roll nicely, and it's light.

2.0 out of 5 stars Tips over all the time. Get something else
Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2019
Size: Carry-On 19-InchColor: BlackVerified Purchase
Used this for international travel and it was the right size and fit what I needed for a month long trip. It’s small, of course, but I am a good packer and packed with weight on the bottom etc. But this thing fell over nonstop during my trip and drove me nuts. I put my shoulder bag on top of this bag so I can have efficient maneuverability and that is definitely not a stable option with this bag. I would also say the wheels weren’t as smooth as I thought they would/ should be with this name brand of Travel Pro. They worked fine enough though and ultimately my biggest complaint is how often this thing fell down. It doesn’t seem like it would be a problem, but when you’re tired in airports the last thing you want to do is have to hold onto your bag nonstop to make sure it stays upright. It hit people, or if I did get it stay upright it the slightest tap would send it tumbling. I figured out how to right the wheels a bit so it didnt happen as often but it was really hit or miss. In the end, this was so annoying that I reached out for help about what to do about it with Amazon.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality
Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2022
Size: Carry-On 21-InchColor: Sapphire BlueVerified Purchase
I have used a TravelPro bag of the same size for many years. The one I bought originally is very sturdy and easy to roll, even over cobblestones. But, its heavy. I ordered this one because it was described as being 4.5 lbs lighter than the one I already had. As a small older woman the weight makes a big difference to me. I received the new bag a couple days before leaving for 16 days in Europe. The zipper on the expansion section was stuck about 3 inches down as if someone had tried to open it but it got stuck. I couldn't get it to budge but since I was trying to travel very light this trip I wasnt planning to use that section so just decided to go ahead and pack. Thats when I noticed how different the inside of the bag was from the one I bought several years ago. The interior was lined in very cheap fabric and fewer interior zipper sections for small items. I decided to use the bag for my trip because it was so much lighter. What a mistake. The pull up handle only "locked" in 2 positions (instead of 4). One of the positions was the very high one which meant I had to hold my arm at a very high position. The other one was the lowest that would mean I had to bend over. The other positions would not lock. My original TravelPro bag had double wheels on each corner. This bag had only one flimsy wheel on each corner. The wheels would not go smoothly over sidewalks and or cobblestone streets. In fact, The bag constantly tipped over. It may be a bit lighter but is basically a piece of junk by comparison to the TravelPro bag of the same size that I bought several years ago. In looking at the website of the company it appears they no longer make the one I have. The new version is lighter because its a piece of junk. I returned it the day after I got home. I plan to call the company directly and try to satisfy my curiosity about why they are now selling such junk. I paid about the same price for both bags. Original bag was worth the price. This bag was overpriced by at least $50 in my opinion. Taking this bag on my trip was a big mistake as it was so difficult to use. Should have used my original one and at least been able to roll it around without it tipping over and sticking unless on flat surface. Just don't order this. It doesn't meet the reputation of TravelPro. The quality has really dropped.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in this travel pro product

I only buy travel pro luggage. My first suitcase lasted 20 years with serious heavy use. I bought this and it is very light, however, tips forward if you put a bad on top of it. I have a small travel pro duffle like bag that attaches easily over pull bar. Works great on all other luggage, except this baby. Very annoying.

Well, we were going to use this in March, but then Rona happened. We finally got to use it... Outside of the return window naturally. I zipped it up (30lbs of clothing) and the bottom zipper popped out, and there went all my junk!

Thankfully the second zipper worked, so we were able to travel with it, but now we know we can't touch the other zipper. Never used before zipper was broken upon arrival... It was off its track.

The sides are flimsier than I would have anticipated and it's embarrassing to see it start bending as people try to pick it up and put it on its side.

I will not be buying this ever again.

Pros: handles like a dream, huge

Cons: broken after 3 trips (I've only owned it for 3 months). Each trip was fairly simple (no month long excursions through Europe or anything). Physically still looks pristine. However, it's durability is really questionable.

First trip: one of the interior clasps (to keep your clothes in place broke. Not a big deal. We moved on.
Third trip: Handle now refuses to expand, making it a real pleasure when that occurs in the middle of your trip!

Will now try filing a warranty claim (which is why I bought this brand in the first place) but annoyed that I had it break as I was trying to use it and now have to go through the warranty hassle.

2.0 out of 5 stars NOT THE COLOR PICTURED; weak interior buckles; cheap interior lining
Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2019
Size: Checked-Medium 25-InchColor: Dusty RoseVerified Purchase
I was so happy to find this luggage in such a beautiful color and perfect size! That is why I was so absolutely DISAPPOINTED when this suitcase came in to find it was a DARK/ DIRTY LAVENDER COLOR and not at all the beautiful dusty pink/rose that was pictured. I told myself it was fine and despite the price was still the best of others I had chosen from, but WRONG.
While traveling from FL to CA and all up and down the CA coast, I realized the poor quality of the materials used. The exterior of the suitcase is great, with a logical design to pockets, sturdy material and stitching, and smooth gliding wheels, but inside it is a different story. The interior BUCKLES ARE CHEAP, the interior LINING AND NETTING ARE CHEAP, and on top of the already FALSELY ADVERTISED COLOR and PRICEY nature of the suitcase itself in comparison to others of similar specs, I was VERY DISAPPOINTED in this product. For the price of this piece I almost just went for the set and I am so glad I didn't.
If this was a $50-$75 suitcase from Marshalls or Ross or somewhere I would be fine with it, but having payed $140 I truly expected something of better quality. Honestly just STICK WITH THE AMAZON BASICS SPINNER SET for $120, they're a much better quality and a fraction of the price! Granted the color selection is not as great (which is why I had originally convinced myself to get this one), but they really are amazing suitcases worth more than the price Amazon sells them for and definitely better quality than this suitcase.
Additionally, despite ScotchGarding the exterior of this suitcase travel transformed the already dingy/dark lavender color of the suitcase to an even nastier looking dirty purple.
SAVE YOURSELF THE MONEY AND DO NOT BUY THIS BAG!!

I used Travelpro luggage for many years and was very happy with it. When I saw that Travelpro had a set of luggage that was lightweight, I didn't hesitate to buy several pieces. The new ones are lightweight, but the zippers are hard to open and close, and a piece of decoration fell off the first time I used it. The wheels work fairly well, but even that is inconsistent. Also, the size of the carryon bags is smaller than typical carryons. Overall this was a very disappointing purchase.
