5.0 out of 5 starsThe perfect carry-on!
Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2018
TL;DR version -- TravelPro makes bags meant to work and live out of. This is no different and fixes three complaints I had about my old Maxlite (2 or 3?):

- The front now has a slant so it doesn't become top-heavy and fall over when fully packed or with your personal bag
- The side carry handle is amazing and 10x more comfortable for getting up and down the airplane
- The soft, rubbery handle peels on the old model and has now been replaced with plain old hard plastic

DO NOTE! There are 2 versions of this bag 21" (international) and 22". They are noticeably different in capacity. If you have a 22" and fill it to the brim, you won't want this version.

Overall, fantastic bag with an incredible warranty. You'll tire of it before you wear it out.

More Context --

As a consultant, I live out of carry-ons (as much as it pains me to type that). When I started traveling heavily about 5-6 years ago, I started paying attention to the frequent travelers and crew members' brands of choice. It was no contest - TravelPro dominated. I picked up the MaxLite 2 or 3 which has taken every bit of abuse I could throw at it over the years with very few complaints beyond what I listed above.

First, I really wanted to point out the size difference. I came from the 1" bigger version and between that and this bag's new "slant", you lose a day's worth of clothes. I can find ways to recover that space because -- for me -- the smaller size of this suitcase fits into the regional / commuter jets I must often take to get back home to Cleveland. However, if you're the type to pack carry-ons full and never take regional jets, you might consider the slightly bigger version.

As light as the old bag is, this one's even lighter. Impossibly light, actually, and it was the first thing I noticed about it. Between that and the 'packing diet' I had to put myself on, it was actually quite pleasant and easy to hoist into the overhead. Beyond that, I cannot speak highly enough of the perpendicular handle. This is one of those silly things that has you immediately wondering "why has no one thought of this before" because your wrist will thank you every time you get on and off a plane.

Beyond that, I have always had a spinner bag and would never go back. It's nice to push the bag through terminals and take the strain off of your arms during longer walks between terminals. These wheels seems easier to get to as well for if/when they get a bit gummed up and need to be cleaned and oiled.

In all, it's a no-frills, professional, ready-for-anything carry-on you'll be happy to own. I really appreciate the new pattern on the interior of the bag as well. In a world of boring greys and blacks, it's nice to see a splash of color when you open it :-)

In sum, TravelPro knows what they're doing when it comes to luggage. This is a rugged, well-built, thoughtfully-executed carry-on you'll be happy to have and own. I'm 100% confident it's ready to work for years to come and, if you do manage to break it, Travelpro backs it with a lifetime guarantee. There's no point in buying some of the ones that cost 2-3x more than these, I literally can't think of anything they could do better. I have been, and will continue to be, a TravelPro fan for life.

I have uploaded two pictures of it next to the bag its replacing to get a feel for how it compares. It's also worth noticing how good of shape the old one is in after about 5 years of use and a ridiculous amount of travel (easily a couple hundred). In the closed picture, this bag has the perpendicular handle and colored "TRAVELPRO". In the open picture, this bag has the nice colored interior and the old one is grey.

I received this through the Amazon Vine program. If you have found it helpful, please let me know!

3.0 out of 5 starsQuality bag that’s light and easy to maneuver, but the tipping issue ruins it.
Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2019
I needed a carry on for Europe. Our family of 6 embarked on a three week, 6 city adventure. Lots of trains and planes, stairs and cobbled streets in the rain. This bag held up great. I bought this bag because I didn’t want to worry about any size issues and end up having to check my bag. I also wanted a light bag and this bag hit the mark on both of those items. It is verblight weight and the size is perfect! I was able to expand it while I went on the trip and added keepsakes as we traveled. I love the color too! The rollers and zippers are quality and the handle worked perfectly as well. I didn’t get stuck once. It held up nicely, but this thing tipped over ALL-THE-TIME!! I even bought some stones at a market for gifts(quarts, crystals and others), they weighed about 5 lbs and I strategically placed then in the bottom back of the bag with other heaver items like my boots in hopes it would help and still it would tip! It was less times, but it still tipped!! We had a running joke about my bag as a family because it was the only one that did this and it was throughout the trip. I had to make sure it was always leaning against something when I was in the restroom, restaurant or checking my phone for ticket information. I ended up straddling it for moment stops when I had to take my hand off the handle to grab a coffee or water or whatever. As much as I love all the other qualities of the bag, the tipping issue has clouded the positive qualities. I will be shopping for another bag, even though this one is still in good condition. It was inconvenient for all of us.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great little carryon - both durable and light.
Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2018
Size: Carry-On 21-InchColor: BlackVine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
I already had the Travelpro 20” carryon, which I had bought for international travel, but it was too small for longer domestic trips. Enter the Maxlite 5 21” carryon. If you think the difference in size is only about 1”, read on:

When deciding to purchase a carryon, it’s important to distinguish the difference between overall size and case size, as this bag is actually 2” taller than the international model - it’s also 1” deeper. That may not seem like a lot but this bag carrries 46 liters in volume, up a full 5 liters from the smaller bag. It’s also lighter: my little international carryon weighs in @ 6.7 pounds (it’s a maxlite 4,) and this puppy weighs in at a mere 5.4 pounds.

This bag has a large outer pocket as well as a smaller compartment. The inside has a full-size zippable mesh pocket as well as a side pocket for odds and ends. The handle is comfortable and extends to 4 positions, (only the two taller positions lock fully in place, ie both lock “up” as well as “down”,) and for easy handling there are two cushioned handles, one at the top and one on the side. In addition, the bag is expandable - nice, because we always seem to come home with more than we started with.

Even though this bag is ridiculously light, it seems sturdy enough, and my experience with TravelPro is their bags last. By the way, TravelPro has it down with their wheels, which are small and unbelievebly maneuverable. I was tempted to get the 25” rollaboard for the extra space, but in the end didn’t, because that model only has two wheels. I’m done with two wheelers - just not as easy to handle. These 4 wheelers have spoiled me.

I believe Travel Pro makes the best bags for the money. They are of a quality build and are well designed. I used buy Victorinox exclusively. No longer: These come very close to that level of quality for a fraction of the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars 23 inches counting the wheels
Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2018

This is a quality, sturdy bag good zippers, wheels, and handle. The side zipper pouch is big enough to stuff a jacket in while wheeling at airport. It is expandable (but then would excede new limits).
However, note it is advertised as 21” but that is just the length of the bag. If you add the length of the wheels, it comes in at 23 inches so if gate personnel wanted to fuss, they could. Comparing with the IT Los Angeles carryon model I also got, which is truly 21 inches, it is 1.8 lb heavier and bigger, but will last longer. I will keep both.

I am so tired of luggage wheels coming off and zipper pulls breaking! I used to spend money on luggage (Tumi) but I gave up! I just figure I will have to buy a new bag ever couple of years. BTW I tried the hard cases but hated them! You either have to fill them up or everything flies around in the bag. I prefer soft bags with the expandable option like this bag. It's a good size for me not so big it gets over weight. I have the matching carry-on for heavy stuff. My struggle as a woman of 60+ is to stay fit enough to toss the carry-on into the overhead when it weighs 60+ lbs!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice luggage. Inaccurate color description.

The luggage is extremely nice quality and very beautiful, the wheels are multi directional, it’s light, and has a very thoughtful design. However, if you order the color dusty rose expecting to have a nice dark pink, you’ll be disappointed; the color is very different from the picture and actually looks purple. So I’ve deducted one star for the color. However, the luggage is so nice that the color difference is easily overlooked. I still recommend this luggage.

I have only brought this suitcase on three trips so far, so I can’t speak for it’s longterm durability, but as far as functionality goes, it’s a great carry-on. I can easily fit everything I need in it for a 5 day trip, though heavier packers might need a larger model. It is very light and easy to maneuver through airports, though I’ve been wondering why the side handle goes “the short way” across the side of the suitcase rather than “the long way”, which seems like it would be easier for carrying. It hasn’t been a dealbreaker for me since I wheel it and only use the handle to lift it into overhead bins, onto shuttles, etc, but my husband noticed it right away because he prefers to carry luggage. I got the bright blue and love the color - when I’ve gate checked the bag, it had been very easy to pick it out at baggage claim.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid basic suitcase; avoid the weird pink color
Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2019
Size: Checked-Medium 25-InchColor: Azure BlueVerified Purchase
I bought the 25" model for a trip to Europe, and it held up fairly well over four flights and some wheeling through city streets. It's extremely lightweight and maneuverable, and wheels well even on bumpy pavements and carpet. The medium blue color picked up quite a bit of grime after the first (apparently very dirty!) flight, which showed up clearly on that shade. The suitcase also came back from the last flight with a small cut/snag in the fabric. It's a bit less tough than I would have hoped overall, since I've had suitcases which withstood years of use without looking this worn. That said, these are purely aesthetic issues, and I'm very happy with the actual functionality of the case.

I initially ordered the suitcase in "dusty rose" and returned it for being hideous. The color shown in the pictures is not at all accurate, and the real color is one of the weirdest stylistic choices I've ever seen from a company. It's less "pink" than a sort of horrible mauve vomit shade. Picture a dark lavender with brown-green undertones, and then trust me that it's worse than you're imagining.

Perfect size for international travel, measurements are OK with international airlines. I like the bag, it's light easy to roll. The one thing I noticed is some of the while stitching is starting to show on the top and I've only used it twice.

I love the weight and size of this suitcase. I picked a color other than black (Slate Green) to easily identify off the conveyer. After my first flight with the bag it had a significant amount of marks from being tossed around. In addition, I had thrown some short Uggs into the front pocket (traveling from MI to FL) and they made permanent indentations in the front of the case despite not being an overstuffed suitcase. As far as the interior goes, we have a Maxlite 4 and it has more interior pockets, plus a garment bag-like folding section - same size case but not sure if different model? I like it better than this one. For the price this is a decent suitcase, but I'm not expecting it to hold up for years (I travel approx. 8-10 flights per year).

4.0 out of 5 stars Big enough for 2 weeks of international travel if you are a light packer like me
Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2019
Size: Carry-On 21-InchColor: Slate GreenVerified Purchase
I need to replace my 10-year old 22” rollaboard (see photo, pink hardcase) and needed something lightweight and can withstand the abuse of cobblestone streets in Europe. I am a light traveler and most recently spent 3 and a half months and 2 seasons in Europe with my hardcase only. I opted for the Travelpro Maxlite 5 spinner after reading good reviews and finding that spinners are more ergonomic. Overall, TravelPro MaxLite 5 is lighter than my old handcarry rollaboard but that’s because it’s smaller. The width is at least 1 inch less than my (See comparison photos of my pink hardcase rollaboard and the MaxLite 5) PROS: Despite the smaller volume, I was still able to fit 2 pairs of pants, 1 pair of shoes, a week’s supply of underwear, a pair of sleepwear, 2 sweaters and 4 summer tops, using packing cubes. There are two external pockets. The larger pocket is big enough to fit my 15.7” laptop and the smaller pocket is about 10” deep by 12” wide. Only the main compartment is lockable.
CONS: only 2/3 of the length is expandable. The zipper handle for the expansion zipper is plastic and I don’t expect it to last. The padded handle on top adds unnecessary bulk that I’m concerned will exceed the international travel luggage size limits. The bottom grab handle is upholstered in the polyester material instead of hard plastic. I don’t think this is a good material because the bottom of the luggage is likely to scrape uneven surfaces of sidewalks. The side pocket in the interior is not an efficient use of space because it doesn’t run along the entire length of the luggage so I opted not to use it.
Overall, I can manage 2 weeks of travel internationally with this TravelPro MaxLite 5 spinner with a smaller under-the-seat second luggage or bookbag.
