Pretty good still, but...

Minor spoilers. This remains a fun series to read, but the decision making capabilities seem to be hitting an all-time low. We also veered right into Battlestar Galactica's territory.
So, if you have an evil, unrepentant mad scientist, why expend energy and plot keeping him alive? Going as far as to antagonize and assault a previously unknown species at first contact to rescue said character.
I'm really hoping decision making skills improve going forward in the series.
If you have a character that has been violated to the point of no longer being human, is suffering unspeakable agony, is in danger of being enslaved by their new genetics, and is literally begging for release through death, why tf do you keep him alive? What evil, uncaring piece of work thinks its better to let that person continue to suffer?
