The book begins with the murder of Paul Battaglia, Alex's mentor and boss. I found the beginning of the book to be great as well as the end but felt that it dragged in parts in the middle of the book. I am used to Alex as a strong character and found her weakness in this book to be somewhat disconcerting(when have we ever known Alex not to participate in a Jeopardy question?). Towards the end of the book, there are signs that the "old" Alex is back and I hope that will be the case in the next book.
I felt that this book refers back too much to the previous book "Killer Look" as it relates to the Wolf Savage case and her kidnapping. If this is one's first Alex Cooper books, they may be confused as to the references to Wolf Savage.
The information on the history of the Bronx Zoo is great and as a resident of NY, I can honestly say it is one of the most interesting sights in NY and truly worth a visit. I love the trio of Mike, Mercer and Alex and while this was not my favorite of this series, I will be eagerly awaiting next summer's release.
