Sorry, couldn't finish it

The protagonist is one of the most snarky, arrogant, self-centered and obnoxious, to say nothing of unlikely, main characters in any mystery novel I have ever read, and I have read literally thousands (yes, its possible; I'll be 78 in December). But, since this is the first in a series, the author is expecting the reader to be comfortable with the remarkably unattractive personality of the main character for a long time. Or, she, the protagonist, is going to have a major epiphany before the end of the book. That is unlikely because tigers don't change their stripes all that often. (Lest anyone think I am saying this because it is a woman heroine rather than a male hero, let me just say that I have been a feminist for over 60 years, long before a lot of women were, for that matter. And I thoroughly enjoy many female mystery writers.) No. its not that. It is that I cannot quite wrap my mind around why a potentially good writer, as is this author, would wrap herself around such an unlikable lead character. I must be missing something here. So, there you have it. One old man's opinion. Worth, perhaps, what you have paid for it. But .....................
