This was a great read for me. Back in the day of this story, rules were made for the benefit of not only the children , but for the protection of the whole family's reputation. Never, ever were children asked what they actually wanted to do about anything. They were only told what was expected of them. This is an amazing story line and has happened in many families, not many have experienced the results of the Stern family........

2.0 out of 5 starsGood concept but badly executed

I was drawn to this book by the author's setting in a post-war lake resort. It was an interesting slice of life, and she did well evoking the whirl of a summer resort, including operations behind the scenes. But I think she blew it otherwise. Her descriptions of the owners and guests at the Jewish resort showed unnecessary disdain. Perhaps she might have included some context for why it was a Jewish resort--namely that resorts and hotels in those days did not admit Jews. Because Jews were not allowed to stay in resorts and hotels, they developed their own. Overall, the book gave an impression that the author spent more time researching the lipstick colors popular in 1951 than she did the social and historical influences on the resort community setting. Add to that a vapid princess as protagonist, who, along with the other characters, could have been much more interesting in the hands of a better author. Instead we got more than anyone would ever care to know about lipstick colors in 1951 or 2017. In the hands of a better author, this could have been a lovely book. Instead, it was dreck (as the characters would say).

Does time and place create the ingredients necessary for friendship to bloom or do life-long connections develop irregardless of where they are planted. In this novel, place is the catalyst for the many years that the writer takes us through and in this case the place is South Haven… a place I have visited many times. It is one of those special towns that allow magic and friendships to grow and last forever. A lovely book about family, friendship and connection to place and how place influences each of the characters lives.

The Last Bathing Beauty by Amy Sue Nathan

1951, back when life was simpler. But was it really? Or did we hide, ignore, sweep under the rug anything not fitting our story book ideals?

It's summer 1951 and Betty 'Boop' Stern has had a dream childhood living with her grandparents at their South Haven MI lakeside resort. Well almost. Now a senior in high school and looking forward to attending Barnard College in NYC in the fall, Betty is determined to find summer love. What she does find changes the course of her life.

The Last Bathing Beauty by Amy Sue Nathan started off fairly slow. I was tempted to set it aside, but ultimately glad I stuck it out. This is a charming story of a girl finding her way to adulthood in the 1950's, making plans and sharing secrets with her two best friends. The story switches back and forth between the summer of 1951 and present day.

Betty, now 84 year olds, enjoys one last reunion with her two life long friends before packing up her beloved resort home. As much as she hates to move away, she realizes it may not be wise to live alone in the big old house and is convinced to move to live with her son and family in California.

An unexpected visit from her granddaughter, revival of Miss South Haven contest, and an unfortunate accident has Betty and friends reliving events of their summer of '51. Long kept secrets are revealed, relationships tested, and Betty is left wondering if broken dreams and changed plans may have been part of the plan all along.

I ended up enjoying The Last Bathing Beauty, in fact think it's author Amy Sue Nathan's best novel so far.

I recommend for anyone wanting the nostalgia of bobby socks, penny loafers, and bonfires with the gang; a light spring read with depth; or reminders that regardless of age, our present does not erase our past. Or our future

I have wonderful memories of vacations at Fiddelman's Resort. My husband played in the band when he was in college and later when we had children we spent the Labor Day weekend at the resort. The author captured the times and the town accurately. The story had wonderful twists and turns. I loved this book.

I seem to be reading a lot of culturally diverse books these days. Again, The Last Bathing Beauty is set in the Jewish community, and from the title I had no idea what to expect. The book is very well written and describes a culture that I'm not particularly familiar with, so I learned a lot from it. Some cultural words were not explained, and that would have been helpful, but usually could be understood from the context.

The style of the book switches from when the heroine is in her 80's (and known as Boop) to her teenage self (and known as Betty). Boop has returned to her family home where her grandparents had run a summer resort. So, her teenage memories revolve around her last summer with her grandparents before she is supposed to go to college in New York. Of course, that plan goes off the rails, a romantic encounter results in some dire consequences. Her two friends have stuck together all through the years. They are probably having their last "get together" in this life, and so the memories flow. There are many parallels that come up with Boop's granddaughter, and Boop learns that the mistakes she made in the past do not have to be repeated by her granddaughter.

The real story behind the story is that much of life is painful, but good can come out of it. Rejection is hard to take, and when family and friends deceive you, it leaves one wondering who you can really trust in this life. In the end, the truth will come out, and then it is up to the individual what he/she will do with that truth. Boop chooses the way of forgiveness and finds that in giving, she receives far more.

Wow!! What an incredible book. A couple of twist I did not expect, but, they were definitely a part of the story. It is amazing to what lengths family will go for their family, and to Force their will. But in the end, the truth cones out. Great book!!!!!

The Last Bathing Beauty takes us back to the summer of 1951 in South Haven, Michigan. Located on Lake Michigan, this area was affectionately regarded as “the Catskills of the Midwest” filled with resorts for the area’s Jewish families. Betty Claire Stern is the granddaughter of the owners of Stern’s Summer Resort and this will be her last summer with her best friends Georgia and Doris before heading to New York City to attend Barnard College hopefully followed by a career at a fashion magazine. Betty quickly finds herself head over heels in love and also gets ready to compete in the annual Miss South Haven beauty pageant. What starts as an idyllic summer becomes one that will change the course of Betty’s life.

The story is told in the past and in 2017 where Betty, now in her 80s and known as Boop, is preparing to leave her home in South Haven and move to California. She has invited Georgia and Doris to visit when Boop’s granddaughter Hannah shows up unexpectedly and in need of help. Hannah’s crisis is all too familiar to Boop’s past, which has long been kept a secret from her family. Boop can’t help her granddaughter until she makes peace with the decisions she made as well as the decisions that were made for her long ago.

The Last Bathing Beauty brings back in accurate detail, an era long gone where families spent entire summers together in resorts (think of the movie Dirty Dancing) and everyone was expected to marry “their own kind.” You can visualize the lakeside resort and feel the yearning of young desire. The characters are endearing and you’ll ache along with them thinking of the roads not taken. None of the plot twists were surprising. This was simply a lovely book.

This book reminds me why my mother always hated family secrets. What a mess. The modern day story felt contrived and unnecessary, and took away from the childish, yet more interesting, story set in 1951. "The girls" read more more realistically in the past than in the present, where they still acted like blushing, bumbling teenagers. And I just couldn't get past the abundant cringe-y metaphors and similies, like these gems:

"Betty sucked in a breath and looked at her shoes, the shiny pennies in her summer loafers staring at her like a wide-eyed hopeful friend."

"The sparkle in Abe’s eyes outshined the crystal chandeliers, and the melody of his words whispering in her ear was more hypnotic than music. His lips against her skin were smoother than the fabric of any cocktail dress."

I guess I just can't relate to pretty much anything in this book. It's set in my parent's era, but maybe because the main character is rich and somewhat spoiled, it doesn't resonate? Or because my parents eloped at 18 because they were legal adults and their parents weren't going to financially support them anymore anyway, so they did what they wanted instead of hanging their happiness on their families' approval?

And what about how little time was given before something blew up into a scandal? Abe was 10 minutes late for a date so Betty was infuriated and embarrassed, and had to make excuses for him? Or that she thought Abe didn't care for her after not hearing from him for a week after his brother was killed and he had to take over as man of the house?

I'm glad it was at least a quick read since I was looking for something light and summery, but I'm disappointed that it really wasn't my cup of tea. I didn't rate it one star since I reserve that for the ones I either can't finish or have to force myself through, but I'd say this was a 1.5 rounded up.
