Great Escape Read---Fast-paced Murder Thriller!
Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2020
Strong follow-up detective story to Book 1, but as a new murder mystery, it can also be read as a standalone novel. The fast-paced storyline follows Detective Inspector Lena Lorenzen from CID in Kiel, Germany, as she leverages her no nonsense and tough-minded investigative skills to this intense drama to find the murderer of a fourteen-year-old girl on an isolated German island.
Lena is a complex character to understand, one of the reasons she so indomitable with her work and challenged with her personal life. A focused police professional every step of the way, Lena pushes her boundaries to the limit to get answers. She suspects everyone, trusts few, but has strong sensitivities to the feelings and motives of other.
The author's focused and chronologically paced storytelling creates a suspenseful police procedural plotline with too many suspects, patchy evidence, and a rushed timeline to satisfy her boss. This book is hard to put down but short enough to make the fast reading journey a great "escape read" with no strings attached.
The crisp dialogue and tight narrative sticks to the murder plotline with only some backstory elements that support the major storyline. The characters are well developed as the plot thickens and too many questions keep arising.
Liked the first book, but enjoyed this one even more. I appreciated the author's spare use of foul language and tastefully brief accounts of intimate situations and sexual crimes.
Hats off to the expert translation that included enough general Germany terms to identify the local, while creating a strong seamless English storyline. Kudos too for Audible's engaging story narration that adds so much to my reading experience.
I hope this series has more installments with this strong and believable female character.
