Fighting Destiny
The Fae Chronicles, Book 1
By: Amelia Hutchins
Narrated by: Sarah Puckett, Stephen Dexter

Consider me wowed! I loved everything about this book, from Amelia Hutchins’ wonderful writing style to the fascinating storylines and characters she created to how the narrators brought it all to life with their outstanding performances. Amelia Hutchins is a creative writer with an imaginative mind, her world building is phenomenal and her supernatural characters are complex and nicely developed, learning more about each as the story goes on. Synthia is my favorite character of the book, she is fierce, has an inner strength like no other and is dedicated to her coven, I adore Adam too. My mind is not made up about Ryder, there is more to him and he is up to something, whether it is good or evil is yet to be seen. This is an entertaining, action packed out of this world story, it is filled with drama, angst, lots of twists and turns, some thrilling suspense, a bit of mystery and there is romance but not your usual lovey dovey type, so do not expect hearts and flowers. Amelia Hutchins, thank you for this fascinating story and the emotional rollercoaster ride. I hope the next book comes out on audio soon, need to know what happens next for Synthia and what Ryder is up to.

I listened to the Audible edition, Sarah Puckett and Stephen Dexter are amazing narrators and voice artists. They bring these characters to life, giving each their own voice and personality, as well as attitude. You could hear how much heart they put into their work as they project the emotions of the characters and the drama of the story into their performance. Sarah’s portrayal of Synthia was spot on, you could hear her strength and determination. Stephen’s Ryder was spot on too, super alpha bossy. Both are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another awesome listen🎧

DNF - stopped at 65%, I just couldn’t take any more. Wish I could get my time back.
Let me start with a positive -for this cover, holy heck -I absolutely love this cover! ❤️
This cover, more than anything else, pulled me in & put it to the top of my TBR list!
Too bad that was all I liked about the book.

The story starts out with an interesting plot. But quickly fell apart. All the hate between the main characters just got to be too much. It was such a repetitive theme (but so much of this book was a repetitive theme) to the 65% point- that alone was enough for me to throw in the towel on this one. I can’t imagine the pair ever working things out at this point. It wasn’t just a “love/hate” thing either. Mentally- they hated each other, physically- they lusted for each other. I just don’t think physical lust can win over mental hate. I couldn’t take any more of these “nearly rape” scenes either, if Ryder doesn’t have to force a woman since he can have anyone anytime without force as he says, why does he seem to take so much pleasure in pushing Synthia with his fae powers into “near miss” sexual situations? It was worse than an actual physical rape in my mind!

I didn’t care for Synthia’s stupidity or the wishy-washy magic abilities. One minute she’s super smart, a super powerful witch, capable of leaping tall buildings (not really, but geesh) & solving crimes, the next minute she’s acting like an argumentative teenager with PMS who can’t seem to shut up enough to keep from sticking her foot in her mouth & causing her own dumb luck. I think she was supposed to come across as snarky, but it was an epic fail. Then there’s Ryder, he’s practically a Neanderthal caveman who happens to have fae abilities. Definitely not my next book boyfriend. Then there’s her so called friends, geesh, I wasn’t buying the friendship thing. Then there’s the name thing, to many similar “A” names used, just got confusing at times.

There were so many points screwed up in this book. Let’s go with needing some sort of index or guide for dummies on the supernatural for this book, since there’s so many varieties of supernaturals, like fairies, brownies, light fae, dark fae, Unseelie, the Dark Horde, and don’t forget vampires (who apparently were fae before they became vampires in this book), & ghosts (the list up to the point I quit I believe)...I just got so confused of what was what (except for the ghosts 😜) since the author seemed to throw things out there randomly, but not in he same context as every other book out there. (I always thought the Unseelie were the dark fae!) & I’d never heard of the Dark Horde before... and the dark fae in the book didn’t have pointy ears, only thing it sounded like they had was incredible good looks, weird eyes, & Magic.

The music, flashy cars & other notable background detail mentions just seemed weird. Seemed like they were stuck in the late 80’s or something. I feel sometimes that it’s better to leave off some of that detail stuff than to pull a book into a time warp. Then there’s all the proof-reading/editing/beta-reader non-catches. My biggest gripe! Stop having friends do this for you. Either hire it done by a professional, or find trust worthy people that are actually good at it! 😡 Just so many things wrong!

What a disaster this book was -on all levels.

This book was extremely vague. So much was going on and it was not put into context. So we don’t know the why’s. It just seems like a lot of stuff is happening for no reason. There is no reasoning behind why we care about the deaths in this book. There’s no connection between them and the main characters. Or why was she hired by the fae in the first place. It just happens.

There was no real direction to the storyline and I tried to stay with it to see if it became clear but the more I read the more confused I became. Things were being explained after the fact which was like reading it backwards. Also, the explanations seemed a bit thrown together last minute.

And the side characters were not very supportive and seemed like terrible friends. They kept things from her and did things they thought were good for her and never apologized for them or explained why they did them. They seemed real shady and secrective. But Synthia stays loyal when they have shown nothing but disloyalty to her.

It’s too bad, because the blurb was amazing.

I don't think I have EVER hated main characters of a book so much.

Ryder and Synthia are absolutely horrible. There is so much hate between these two and it never really develops into much else.

Ryder is the Prince of the Dark Fae, and he is just some hulking idiot that thinks he's right about everything and constantly threatens to have sex with Synthia to punish her. He argues with her at every turn about the most ridiculous things.
Then halfway through the book Synthia walks in on him having sex with someone else and he just taunts her.

I thought Synthia was going to be a badass character at first. Shes not. She's super wishy-washy and argues with him likes shes a child. She's all powerful and doing great detective work one minute, then a whining child the next.

I read the entire book because the plot itself was somewhat interesting and I was waiting to see if the relationship would grow beyond the hate.
Ryder ends up branding her as his without her permission. He becomes oddly obsessive even though he still treats her like crap.
The author also adds in so many different types of paranormal beings that it becomes hard to follow at moments. There are dark fae, light fae, demons, ghosts, vampires, witches, and unknown fae.
Its just a mess.
There were so many times I wanted to stop while reading this and I honestly wish I had.
I was recommended this author in a reading group and I can say I'll definitely never read anything else from her.

This book was so bad it made me want to fight someone. I only made it to 26%, and maybe there was a redemption arch coming later but I think I would have been mad at myself if I found the main character redeemable in any way. He’s a rapist and sexual assaulter. So far he sexually assulted her in a room with two others as a “job interview” , threw her around while screaming at her in a way that in no way furthered the plot, referred to her as a “thing” he wanted to own, and allowed a room filled with men to mind rape her.

His “fae power” to make her crawl and beg for him is the equivalent of being drugged. She repeatedly says no, continually tells him not to touch her, and the only time she says anything even bordering on consent is when she’s so deeply drugged she’d mount a tree. I’m all for a trashy fun erotic book that rides that fine line of rough to too much ratio, but I found this book deeply disturbing.

Unfortunately I deleted this book after about an hour. The story was incredibly rapey, with poor world/character building and magic powers that seemed to be all over the place and inconsistent. Within the first few pages, a character we're supposed to sympathize with but also hate (?) dies and then is ~spiritually~ brought back after somehow being cremated in a small room and having her ashes literally sat on by the bare cheeks of the main character. I cannot explain in enough detail how confusing the first two chapters of this book are. I hope the author improves in her writing style, because the story might be very interesting if it were properly fleshed out.

These books are great. There's a lot going on in the first couple of books that draw you in and make you want to read them.
BUT!
When you get to book five if you don't read the spin-offs you're lost and missing information.
This is incredibly frustrating.
I started reading this series. It's the main series. It's where you learn about the world and the characters. You know what's going on. Then all of a sudden you don't. You're missing information and it's like wait, wtf? Why does this not make sense? What did I miss? Did I skip a book and not know it?
Kinda, yeah.
I probably would have read the spin-offs happily. I wouldn't have even been upset about it. But that you HAVE to read them in order to know what is going on with the main series that you've been reading and are already invested in is bad. It's actually kind of shady. It forces you into purchasing and reading books that you may not want to. Not everyone is interested in spin-offs. Or the side character's stories. That's exactly what happened here and it super annoying. You are confused about your main world and characters because the side character's spin-off stories make you feel out of place.
I like the books and all the characters but the fact that I HAVE to read the other books to understand is BS.
I read the first one with kindle unlimited. They should all be kindle unlimited for this reason alone. The spin-offs should be placed in order with the main series.
I honestly don't know if I would have purchased the entire main series if I had know I would have to purchase both spin-off series to know what's going on with my main books.

This first book is a 4 star for sure. The others up to book 5 are also 4 star. But I rated this as a one-star so readers like me might be able to decide if they want to continue beyond book one knowing they HAVE to purchase the rest, plus the two spin-offs.
It's terribly disappointing because the books are really good and the story is fun and I like the characters.
I just don't like being forced or tricked into lining people's pockets. Which is exactly what this feels like. Greed.
I am an indie author and I wholeheartedly support indie authors but I would never do this to my readers. It's wrong.

This book is all over the place... the first half of the book is so confusing. The writing is serious terrible... either no editing happened or someone with a middle school reading equivalency edited it for the author. The story itself is intriguing once you sift through all that does not make sense, but in the end it seems like a poorly represented fan fiction redo. If you’re down with women not having a choice and basically being back in the dark ages, you may enjoy this drivel. For a character that is supposed to be so bad ass as an enforcer... she’s really pretty weak. Even though I want to know who the horse king is and what happens, I can’t justify spending $20 for the conclusion of this series with such horrific writing

1.0 out of 5 stars This book needs an editor. Stat.

This book could use an editor bad. It desperately needs it. There were plenty of errors but the most jarring was how, in the same scene it would go back and forth from present tense to past tense without rhythm or reason. It's not as if the characters were thinking about another moment other than the one they were in.
The plot was intriguing but the passion scenes were a bit much. It almost felt as if the author didn't bother reading the passion scenes when she edited it. Or maybe she published the first draft? That would explain the issues that were missed. Maybe she was uncomfortable reading it? It's hard to say.
The male lead kept repeating himself over and over. "Do you want more?" and she'd reply that she did, only for him to ask her that at least two more times. His thoughts also repeated. There were paragraphs that felt like they were copy and pasted only to be slightly reworded in order to draw out the scene.
I think this book would be worth reading if the author had bothered to do a once over and maybe even just get a friend to look over it first.
I did enjoy the overall story, but after looking at how many books are in the series, I have to wonder how much this author is going to drag everything out because it doesn't feel like there's enough story potential for more than two books without feeling like a chore to read.

I agree with the other 1 star reviews... awful book. Main characters were juvenile and annoying. Her so called "friends" I could do without in the story. And why do the characters, when speaking to each other, have to say the person's name they are talking to over and over again. They could be the only two people in the room yet their back and forth dialogue has to always mention the others name. It is so annoying I wanted to pull my hair out. There's a whole list of issues with this book but other reviewers have mentioned them already. I have learned a good lesson here...Don't trust 5 star reviews.

I wanted to like this book. I genuinely wanted it to be good because the premise sounded interesting but wow 40% in and im just annoyed and disturbed.
There is so many threats of rape from the Male MC towards the female MC. Im not just talking about a risky "hard to get" situation, I'm talking full on he knows she's absolutely terrified of him raping her and yet he still threatens her with it.
It was also extremely repetitive, only 40% in and FMC has already been blown up twice and both times play out very similar to one another.
Also I have to say this, I cuss like a drunken sailor and even I had a problem with how many times the F-word was used. I feel like it was the authors attempt to make things feel sexy but imo I just felt perved out and like the idea that the fae can literally "f*** someone to death" honestly just sounded like some kind of 14 year olds weird fanfiction.
Rapes never sexy and never okay and I can't say that enough.
