Great and capable device, wish it had better speakers and bluetooth audio

We're planning a road trip when this whole COVID-19 thing calms down with a final destination of a beach house with some friends. We'll be traveling with them and their child, and one of the things that we have heard in the past is how they hate trying to find free space on their phone that will be enough to entertain for a dozen hours in the car. When we saw this device, we knew it had some potential, for sure.
Something I noticed right away are how straightforward the player is to get up and running. Once you plug the device in and turn it on, there were only a couple of quick setup questions (what language you want, etc), and other than that you're up and running.
After you get through the setup screen, the next thing I noticed was how quickly it went from turning on to being totally started up and playing a movie! We've had blueray players that have taken quadruple the time this thing did to start playing, so this is quite refreshing. No waiting for a minute or more before the pre-movie previews started - that's nice, and to be honest kind of unexpected due to the size. Huge improvement in technology!
The selection buttons are intuitive with what you'd expect them to be, and they seem to function better than the blueray players we've had in the past... With past players, smetimes you have to push fast forward, sometimes 'skip', but both never worked, and you kind of had to guess which to use. This device's controls with the blueray screens was much more intuitive and just made more sense.
The screen is actually really well utilized - the movie covered the entire screen and there wasn't a ton of null space like you do on your TV. The picture and colors are relatively vibrant and screen is pretty bright, so it should be great for viewing in the car. The one downside is that there is some dulling when you go too far to the side of the screen (as in - you're not right in front of the device), but watching on-device you're not really using this for a room full of people unless it's connected into your TV. The screen swivels and even lays flat against the device, which is also nice. The swivel action only works in one direction, though, so be mindful to not force it!
It's really nice that this has a battery, but also comes with a wall charger, and also a car charger as this gives a lot of different options for on-the-go. It's also nice this player has the ability to output to a lot of different devices, which makes this pretty versatile. I'm thinking once we get to our destination that a movie night may have to happen at the house bc it can output to HDMI. The vacation house always has a TV, and we always end up having one night of not great weather, so this will save the night!
While you're more than likely going to use this with a pair of headphones, I think one of my gripes is that the speakers on the player itself are not great. They're not horrid, but they definitely lack bass and they could be louder. While the device doesn't claim this is a capability (that I can see), it also doesn't come with Bluetooth, which means you also can't use them with wireless headphones. This would have been nice to be able to eliminate a cable, but it's obviously not a deal breaker for us.
All in all we're pretty pumped to give this a try on our trip. Our plan is to grab some Redbox movies to take with us and return them on the way down after they've been watched. I'm sure in the end it'll help us save a bit of sanity (and keep everybody less bored).
