A mixed bag of short stories

As is true for the other two volumes in this three-volume collection, what the buyer gets is a selection of Holmes pastiches that are set during the first two years of Watson and Holmes rooming together at 221b Baker Street. Watson is learning more and more about Holmes and his likes and dislikes during this two-year interval, and of course the reader shares in Watson's findings. With so many different authors, the short adventures differ wildly in complexity and in potential reader interest. [I also agree entirely with the reservations expressed in another review on these pages, by Michael L.] On the whole, I was not disappointed, and did not find any story to be a waste of my time.

This one, to me, had the best stories. I really enjoyed all of these. Nice fun read on quiet afternoons. The different styles of each author is clear and its fun to see different views towards historical events or their approach to a mystery.

Sherlock-Holmes-Pastiches und auch diese Sammlung leiden zu einem großen Teil daran, dass ihre Autoren Personen der Gegenwart und überhaupt nicht in der Lage sind, Atmosphäre und Lebensstil des ausgehenden 19. Jhd. zu vermitteln. So zeichnen sich auch diese Geschichten zunächst durch aufdringliche politische Korrektheit aus. Die Fälle, die der große Detektiv lösen soll, sind ebenfalls modern, die Themen begegnen mir täglich im Fernsehen. Genau das will ich nicht, wenn ich Sherlock Holmes lese.

Es wird vergleichsweise sinnlos geplaudert, und die Geschichten wirken verkrampft. Typische Beispiele für verpfuschte Erzählungen sind die mit dem entführten Mädchen (Achtung Spoiler: Wer will mir ernsthaft erzählen, dass sich der Entführer einen künstlichen Bart aus den Haaren eines Mädchens bastelt?) und die mit dem elektrischen Turm, der Erdbeben auslöst.

Außerdem ist mir aufgefallen, dass der Ich-Erzähler Dr. Watson in diesen Geschichten viel stärker im Mittelpunkt steht als in den Originalen.

Excellent Pastiches

This was another strong collection of traditional pastiches with enough outre elements as well as darkness to make them really interesting as well as modern. My favourites were~
1. Annette Siketa's "The Adventure of the Three Fakirs";
2. Kevin Thornton's "The Mystery of Maclean House";
3. Ian Ableson's "The Adventure of Percival Dubois";
4. S.F. Bennett's "The Disappearance of San Sebastiano";
5. Emily J. Cohen's "The Case of the Missing Waistcoat";
6. Tim Gambrell's "The Mystery of the Missing Will";
7. G.C. Rosenquist's "The Bizarre Challenge of Strange Mr. K".
With so many highly readable and memorable stories, this collection, in my opinion, deserves max rating. Highly recommended.
