5.0 out of 5 starsFantastic start to a new series!
Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2020
I had high expectations. I’ve been reading Hearne’s stuff avidly since the start of the Iron Druid series, and loving them, so the bar was set in the stratosphere.

Ink and Sigil cleared it with room to spare.

I’m delighted with the protagonist. It’s always a pleasure to have a fantasy protagonist that is NOT a tormented teenager! Al MacBharrais is a character with experience and history and depth; a widower who has known and lost deep and abiding love, but who isn’t defined by that loss. He’s smart, he’s vibrant, and he cultivates and delights in unusual acquaintances.

The supporting cast is similarly drawn, with finesse and charm and extravagance. The system of magic is inventive, and well fleshed-out for a first book of a series. And the portrait that’s painted of Glasgow is precise and compelling. But perhaps my favorite quality to the novel is the fierce effort put into capturing the flavor of the Glaswegian dialect, in an accessible way - an effort which I feel pays off wonderfully. I’m familiar with the dialect and I think Hearne has done a masterful job sharing it, and it colors the entire novel with a rich linguistic palette.

Altogether, a delightful read - heartily recommended!

3.0 out of 5 starsSometimes jarring
Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2020
I picked up Hearne's first few Iron Druid books for some reading while I recuperated from a nasty bit of foot surgery. I enjoyed those a lot, and kept up with those.

"Ink and Sigil" keeps has the familiar pop-culture and snark, along with the inventive magic and magical beings. Unfortunately, it also contains several poorly integrated info dumps that don't entirely make sense. I genuinely don't know what the point of some of them were. Some relate to the subject of human trafficking, which dovetails with a plot element, but still seemed rather forced. I'm baffled an editor didn't push him on the info dumps.

Like many college educated people of a certain class, Hearne is apparently still processing his trauma from recent right-wing populist victories in the US and England. While Trump is never explicitly named, reference to him and Brexit are clear and jarring. I am the last person to suggest that people shouldn't be political in their writing (Kim Stanley Robinson is probably my favorite SF author), but in "Ink and Sigil" it seems just too obvious and not fully processed. It wrenched me out the story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sneaking in current politics diluted a great story.

Kevin Hearne's writing style is prolific in this volume. The storyline was decent, if not a bit parallel to the way The Iron Druid began. Unfortunately, bits of snarky political comments seeded throughout this volume were just enough to make me think twice about buying another book in this series. Being a devoted fan of everything else written by this author, it was difficult to come to that conclusion.
Mr. Hearne,
You lost some of what was once a great deal of my respect when you wrote negatively about "gun nuts" and incorporated political rumors into your writing. Many of us read fiction as a vacation. It felt less so with this book because it was a repeated reminder of a ridiculous political battle currently being waged in America. I will continue to regard you affectionately for your previous works.

5.0 out of 5 stars No druid, but a hobgoblin might do.

Very entertaining read. I didn't fall in love with this one the way I did the iron druid series, but for a debut series it has a lot of potential. I love the characters. This is probably the first series I've read with a hobgoblin as a main character and it was well worth the wait. Buck foi alone would be enough for me to read this, but the other characters are great fun as well. I don't like the magic in this book as much as I did the iron druid series, but I think it's an interesting angle and I could grow to enjoy it as much as the iron series. It left me eager to see what comes next and really what more could you ask for from a book?

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute delight to read!!

I fell in love with this world and laughed through every minute of it!! Ink and Sigil is set in the world of Iron Druid, but you do not have to have read that series(I have not) to completely enjoy this one!! I will definitely be reading that series after finding this one. This is a contemporary fantasy set in Glasgow, and follows Al MacBharrais, who is one of only 5 agents working for the Fae in our world to help control visits to our world by the various gods and their minions. These agents use written sigils to write contracts with various Fae and also different sigils that can provide quick healing or increased strength. Unfortunately, Al has been cursed and the longer he talks the more someone comes to hate him, so he has to use a text to speech app or writing to communicate, his apprentices also have a very bad habit of dying. When Al's latest apprentice is found dead, it sends Al on a mission to find out why and brings him a new companion, Buck the hobgoblin. Together Al and Buck hilariously begin their search for answers and are lead in some surprising directions as they solve this mystery.
I can't even begin to tell you the number of times I laughed during this fantastic story!! The world is so easy to dive into and such fun, love all the characters and the Al and Buck show is endlessly entertaining!! Learning about all the different sigils, inks and the interactions with the different Fae all while meeting such intriguing characters makes this such a delightful story to read. I will never look at a van with wizard art on it the same again!! So looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Follow up to The Iron Druid Series

I love Kevin Hearne’s writing style and attention to details and culture, and this book did not disappoint. Reading the Iron Druid series in its entirety during the pandemic, I was hungry for more. I polished off this book in 2 nights and can say it was well written with a great plot and story line. After seeing a few mediocre reviews referencing political views, I was cautious as I read but only found a few quick references. They certainly were not harped on or shoved down your throat in any way. The fact that characters in a book may say something in the context of their character, does not mean you trash the whole book. Looking forward to book 2! Keep ‘em coming, Kevin!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome fantasy adventure!

This book was amazing!! It was funny, adventurous, and did I mention funny? This book was set in the same world as the Iron Druid series, but it had it’s own world-building to it because it follows a totally different character than the Iron Druid. The characters were awesome, as was the weaving in of the Fae world along with modern day technology. Another thing that I really loved was that the author gave different characters different accents! It was a fun challenge trying to keep up with who sounded like what. I highly recommend this book to folks who enjoy fantasy, adventure, Fae, pantheons of gods, curses, international characters, and funny dialogue. Just mind those raisin scones!

All in all this was a fun, quick read that was entertaining and enjoyable. A few parts of the book were a little PC like other reviewers had noted, but it's also a fantasy book with trolls. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the Iron Druid Series, but would say that if you're just getting into these types of books, start off with "Hounded" by Kevin Hearne.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ink and Sigil: Another Hearne Winner

As a longtime Iron Druid fan, I'm always interested in what's new from Kevin Hearne. While at first I worried that I would miss the hilarious banter that permeates Oberon and Atticus's adventures, I found that the characters in Ink and Sigil were witty, fun, and well-developed, and that I really like the whole premise of this story. Fun, fast moving and very engaging, I look forward to the next in this series. Well done, Kevin Hearne!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun read

This is a good, fun read with great unique characters and an engaging world. While it does get a little rambling at times, those rambles end quickly enough and the story picks back up again before losing the reader's interest. Definitely worth reading if you enjoyed the iron druid (though you certainly don't need to have read those to understand this book), if you love Scotland, or if you are a fan of urban fantasy and are looking for a fresh take on the genre.
