4.0 out of 5 starsDecent sequel
Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2019
Sure, this is generally the same story structure as the first, the characters are trapped in a video game and have to win it to get out, but I found Jumanji: the Next Level to be a fairly entertaining time.

The movie's biggest strength is it is just having fun. Humor works pretty well, though a bit about the two elderly new comers to the game Eddie and Milo having trouble understanding what is going was stretched way too long. The characters all still work well off each of each other.

The action is bigger than the first and pretty impressive. I liked that their are more animal threats in this, which make the events feel more diverse. The film looks nice. The location is shifted from the traditional jungle to other exotic locales keeping things fresh.

The best new additions are Eddied, the crotchety old guy, and Milo, the affable but long-winded old guy. These guys serve as fresh new eyes to the world of Jumanji and are pretty funny, but their best aspect is their interactions with each other and the personal story of how these two once friends became estranged.

The cast playing the video game avatars that the characters become continue to do a great job. This time, some of them are given a chance to play different people. Everyone's pretty versatile. Awkwafina's in this and she is equally talented. I'm disappointed that Danny Devito and Danny Glover as the real world Eddie and Milo aren't in more of this, because I felt these were one of their best roles.

We really didn't need Nick Jonas back in this. He's mainly here because he was in the last one. The guy doesn't add much, especially since the cast is a little full as it is. Also, I felt the part of the introduction with real world Spencer (Alex Wolff) was a little rushed.

The villain in this Jurgen the Brutal (Rory McCann) has a little more to him than the paper-thin villain from the last film but not by much. You probably won't think of him after seeing this.

Overall, I liked the first movie, because the concept was fresher but this is a fun ride.

1.0 out of 5 starsThis is not a kid's show for the frequent use of horrible, foul language.
Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2019
I drove to see this at the theater 45 minutes away from my home. I went excited because the last Jumanji was so fun and funny but soon found that the foul language in this sequel was terrible and frequent and the storyline was just okay. I'd give the writers and producers a do over, only this time make it kid friendly like it should be.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's PG13 not G, yes Language is "bad"

Not as good as the first, though it's a sequel so slightly expected and still enjoyable. Though I am confused why in the 1st one they had the voice of their avatar/character but in this one the avatar/character had the voice of the person playing them. So it was weird (minor spoiler) having Dwayne Johnson with a mash up of Danny DeVito's voice. Definitely gets some good laughs though. For those upset it's not a kids movie.
1: Did you watch the first one? Seriously cursed multiple times, this is on the same language level
2. It's rated PG-13, not PG, not G
3. If your child is 5th grade or older, trust me they've heard worst language at school from friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars As Good as The First One

With the language of the characters, this was more designed for a mature audience. I read a lot of the reviews before I purchased the video and that seemed like the only real complaint. I rather enjoyed the movie, although the first had more depth in the characters' development. The only real complaint I have is the two old men caught in Jumanji acted more like they were totally senile rather than just old, which began irritating me a bit. Otherwise, this would have been a 5 star review.

4.0 out of 5 stars What's with all the "foul language" complaints!?
Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2020

I'm perplexed by the negative votes of viewers offended by this film's language. It's rated PG-13 (According to the MPAA, a PG-13 always comes with the warning: Parents Strongly Cautioned). I realize I'm sort of reviewing the reviewers here but...just wow.

As for the film it's a lot of fun. I found it to be about the equal of the previous film. There's some very good quality control in this series. I'd give all three Jumanji films B+'s. Each film takes the infinitely creative premise and does something different with it. This third film had more fun with the body-swapping, leading to not only amusing comedic scenes but a few genuinely touching moments (the body-swapping isn't just used as a gimmick here). I also thought "The Next Level" had a far superior villian then "Welcome to the Jungle" whose lame antagonist was the weakest element of that otherwise very good adventure film. Jack Black and Kevin Hart are given more to do here-Kevin Hart's comedic talents were under-utilized in the previous film. However it's the boundless charisma of Dwayne Johnson and the drop-dead gorgeous badass Karen Gillan who once again steal the show.

Also, despite the PG-13, I would say it's appropriate for kids 10 and up. Ignore the bizarre negative votes centered on language. Decrying a film for having foul language is a very petty, immature critique.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and well made, if a tad repetitive
Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2020

Surprisingly similar in formula to the first, so in that respect it felt a little unnecessarily repetitive. However, the witty banter and lighthearted action - that are the main attraction of both movies - continues and kept it enjoyable. It’s not as memorable as the first movie, but well worth watching if you enjoyed the first.

There’s a slight but noticeable drop in video quality over the first movie, surprisingly - perhaps because this sequel is not mastered with Dolby Vision. The first is an exemplar movie for showing of the benefits of Dolby Vision, whereas this sequel doesn’t “pop” the same way. It still looked fairly good, and didn’t exhibit any major mastering issues, but still it feels odd to regress.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) is a terrific film and fun to watch!

Dwayne Johnson was terrific as Spencer in the first film "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" (2017), as a humorously exaggerated version of an adolescent (Alex Wolff) discovering the power of adulthood, but as the outer version of Spencer's cranky grandfather (Danny DeVito) in Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), Johnson is clearly having more fun. Terrific film and fun to watch!

Loved this movies. If ever a film takes you away from what's sadly happening around us, this is an escape from reality. Everyone does a great job getting the avatar's human personalities to show through. The cursing is very lame but I recommend for adults if be offending to some. Don't knock the movie because The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) rating is not acceptable to you and THAT's where complaints should be directed to if you feel that strongly about it. Usually sequels are not up to par but this just as good as Welcome to the Jungle. Jack Black of course top notch. Hope there's another one but only if same cast of actors!

Just rented and watched the sequel and Jack Black is AWESOME. He switched from one character to the other and was believable every time. The story line could have been better and I hope there is not a "Jumanji Three: This time it's personal". Any way, worth the rental and worth the two hours. I'd watch it again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, entertaining movie but....

This is the second of the "new" Jumanji movies (Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, etc.) It has its moments but not as good as the original. And, if you have "little' ones....watch out for sexual references occasionally. The storyline in this one is occasionally confusing (and sometimes you need a scorecard to keep up with the ever-changing characters). The first of the two was much better!!

Loved it, but not for young kids with all the unnecessary foul language. If they would have dialed back the foul language, it would have been a absolute home run
