5.0 out of 5 starsI Loved It!
Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2022
Tamie Dearen goes out with a bang in the final Limitless Clean Billionaire Romance series! Branson, Finn, and Cole had their stories told in the first three novels. Now, it's Jarrett's turn.

Rylie, whose identical twin sister Carlie is a famous country singer, encounters longtime friend (and crush) Jarrett and tells him, to his delight and her chagrin, that Carlie has moved in with her after divorcing her embezzling manager/husband. Jarrett, who considered Carlie the love of his life,, is thrilled by the news. Rylie is *not* thrilled.

A complication arises. Jarrett wants to adopt Gabe, a three-year-old Puerto Rican orphan with leukemia. The caseworker prefers to place the boy with a married couple, so he asks Carlie to marry him to be awarded the adoption, at which point they'll get divorced. Carlie consents. Rylie is heartbroken.

Another complication arises. Carlie is too sick the day of their "wedding" to join Jarrett at the registry office, so she sends Rylie in her place. Rylie refuses to lie about her identity, so she becomes the "bride", knowing that she's simply the substitute for her sister. They travel to Puerto Rico, pick up Gabe, and bring him back to Jarrett's place.

Yet another complication arises. Gabe has bonded with Rylie and cries whenever he's without her, even when's Jarrett has him. It looks like Rylie will need to stay with her "husband" and "son" though Gabe's treatment. The divorce will need to be delayed up to a year. Jarrett is happy for Gabe's sake. Rylie, on the other hand, is miserable.

The angst in "... Alternate Marriage" is more frustrating than in "... Temporary Marriage", Cole's fake marriage story, because Rylie harkens back to her rejection by Jarrett nine years earlier, whereas Jarrett merely has to fight his growing attraction to Rylie as he realizes he always wanted the wrong twin. Every time one if them " recognized the truth"--which wasn't the truth at all--I created a snarky Note to avoid hurling my Kindle across the room. Nevertheless, the HEA is on its way, so I waited patiently and was rewarded for my patience!

The "alternate" title refers to the switch of one twin for another. Carlie is more interested in furthering her career than in mothering a sick little boy. Rylie is the opposite. Jarrett must choose between them. Knowing has heart for those with special needs, it's a choice the reader can predict long before Rylie does.

"... Alternate Marriage" is billed as a romance, not a rom-com, but laughs come from Matthew the lawyer, whose irritation is grounded less on inundation from paperwork and more on personal resentment, and from Jarrett's mother and sisters, all of whom make inappropriate jokes about the marriage they think is real.

"... Alternate Marriage" is the perfect read for anyone who likes clean romances with characters who have good hearts. I loved it!

2.0 out of 5 starsAlmost didn't finish

I've loved this series; however, this story about the h marrying someone in love with someone else turned into an emotional trigger. The difference is that in this story, the h knew beforehand. Some of us, unfortunately, find out after the fact. I jumped to the end and was grateful to see the HEAs for the friends, but didn't have the stamina to wade through to find out how Rylie and Jarrett arrived at theirs. I'm just glad to know they arrived.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tread cautiously
Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2019
I laughed out loud at the double ovens. Unfortunately, I was cringing through most of the rest of this book.

- white savior complex: A wealthy American man adopts a little boy from a Puerto Rican orphanage so the child can receive cancer treatments.
- diet culture: Hoo boy! Way too much talk about “healthy” food versus “junk.” Super-triggering for people with eating disorders and reinforcing of incompetent relationships with food in general. Surprisingly, there really wasn’t any fat-shaming, although the dieting mentality is predicated on the idea that fatness is bad. There is a comment about returning to prepregnancy weight. There is, however, no diversity in body size among the main characters, and all the supporting roles appear to be thin as well.
- ineffective apologies: Marital advice is given, stating that blanket apologies make women amenable to sex. Utterly gross.
- ableism: People are said to do things despite their disabilities. It’s inspiration porn and dehumanizing.
- miscommunication: Rather, a refusal to communicate. We’re supposed to believe that a high-powered, wealthy executive is afraid to go after what/who he wants? This would’ve been a much stronger story without the overused miscommunication trope.
- miraculous pregnancy: We get that they’re married and having sex; we don’t need a pregnancy to prove that yes, sex is happening. Apparently, marriages aren’t real or complete without at least one bun in the oven, which suggests to childless and child-free couples that their marriages are invalid.

I wish romance writers would think critically about their stories before they publish. There’s no excuse for ableism, racism, fatmisia, etc., to be included in a story except as a point of conflict with a positive resolution.

3.0 out of 5 stars Missed the mark for me
Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2019
I have really enjoyed the other books in this series, but this one missed the mark for me. Maybe it was the lack of chemistry, not to mention lack of communication. There were some errors in the book which were a little distracting. When Carlie referred to Nicaragua instead of Puerto Rico I assumed it was because of her "I am not really interested in others" personality, but when one of the other characters, perhaps Jarrett, who certainly knew better, did the same I wondered if the author originally intended that to be Gabe's home country, but not all changes were made when it was switched to Puerto Rico. The whole interior design fiasco seemed a little far fetched, too. Who would pay all that money, even if a billionaire, and settle for something they hated. I couldn't decide if the reference to "funk" shui not feng shui was intentional; perhaps considering the outrageous design of the suite it was.

3.0 out of 5 stars Attractive Characters, Tedious Storytelling
Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2021
There is so much about this story to like--attractive characters, intriguing family dynamics, decent writing, disability motif, occasionally witty dialog. But the story arc is tediously drawn out and the absence of genuine sex is utterly unrealistic, given the ages and professional standing of all the major
characters. What we get instead is a more decorous version of middle school "making out." Please....

There was so much potential for a really great story here, squandered in favor a "clean" one marred by cheap sentimentality and close to blasphemous invocations of God as essentially stage decorations.

I wish the author had maintained the high quality of her more serious starting entry in this series, The Billionaire's Secret Marriage.

Sigh.

Doormat

Both Jarrett and Carlie treated Rylie like a doormat. They both used her and treated her dreadfully, in my opinion. At least, that’s how I read it. Riley was completely selfless, always thinking of others and putting herself last. Carlie was always looking out for number one and was thoughtless and self centred. Jarrett was clueless and I wanted to smack him upside the head.

-‘“But you’re not even in love with him, are you?” Rylie raised her tea mug, hoping to hide the hurt behind her question. “You told me you weren’t sure you ever were in love with him.”
“That was before I saw him again.” Carlie dug another spoonful of yogurt from the plastic container and held it poised in front of her face. “I’d forgotten how hot he is.” “And how sweet he is,” Rylie added, with a sigh.’-

I really enjoyed the Limitless series of books. This one was probably my least favourite though. I just didn’t feel the chemistry between the characters and I thought their lack of communication was extreme. I did enjoy the fact that it was a clean, Christian romance.

I received a free advanced copy of this book, but this review is my honest opinion.
