I didn't want to buy another Dune book! I have the whole series in hardback and thought it was done! BUT...I obviously had to buy this next book and I'm glad I did (even though I had to rearrange my scifi bookcase). The authors continue to surprise and delight me with new insights into the Dune world. This story takes place just prior to the original Dune and presents a new back history about Duke Leto and his family. It was like visiting old friends again! I'm looking forward to the next two installments in this trilogy.

I have read all the Dune books. It is my favorite series, both new and old, with the exception of Ender. I think these authors work best away from the main characters. This book adds nothing to the series and seems to jump around from character to character way too much and with little value to the plot. I question if they wrote this while awake! All the little things that make the original series are missing except for the dialigue and the politics. It is like the characters are zombies with no direction to move!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great addition to the Duniverse

As spoiler-free as I can make it. I don't think anything will be spoiled in this review but I do talk about what I thought of the book and that requires a little bit of detail.

Duke of Caladan takes place in the year before the Atreides travel to Arrakis to take over spice production. The first book in the new trilogy picks up where the Prelude to Dune trilogy ends. You definitely don't need to read the prelude books (the house books) but it fits together with this one nicely.

Anytime I can get back into the Duniverse, I am a happy camper. This book sucked me right back there. The worst thing I can say is that it will feel like forever before I can read the next book.

I won't regurgitate the description but I will summarize it from my point of view. The book is about coming of age as Paul kind of discovers who he is, what he is capable of, what his duties are, and to a degree, what he wants from life. With Paul, Leto, and Lady Jessica it is also about integrity and honor and making the best choice when the right choice is not obvious. Loyalty and fidelity can't help but make an appearance when talking about the Atreides.

The cast you are expecting is there in various capacities. We see quite a bit of Gurney, a bit of Thufir, and not enough Duncan (although he does have a part to play). The Baron, the emperor, and Mohaim have roles to play too.

There is a new enemy. I won't spoil anything there but it is an interesting topic and takes us to places on Caladan we haven't seen before. We get some new lore and cultural details. I enjoyed the exposure to more Caladanian flora and fauna.

This is a page-turner and I burned through it. It is not a difficult read. If you liked Prelude to Dune, you will like this new trilogy. I'd say it is on par with those books. The Legends of Dune (the earliest books dealing with Omnius and the Buterlian Jihad) is my favorite set of books in the expanded Duniverse but if the second and third books in this trilogy keep pace with the first one, they will be worthy of a spot in my bookcase.

If I had to pick a nit, I can really only find one and it did not impact my enjoyment. The book ends with most conflicts unresolved. I expect the next book to pick up minutes after the first ends. That's not an issue for me as I plan to read the next two. I like that, in the end, it will be a massive related read. But I know some people are turned off by that. If you want all the conflicts resolved before you buy, wait for the trilogy to be complete.

I recommend that all dune fans add this to their library.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Duke of Caladan is a great read!

Did you ever wonder how Duke Leto was granted Arrakis by the Emperor? The Duke of Caladan is the first book of a new Dune trilogy which explores this question. It’s a great read which touches on a number of questions I’ve had as a long time Dune fan (I originally read Dune when it was serialized in Analog in the 1960’s). I know some Dune fans don’t like the prequels, sequels, etc., written by Kevin and Brian (you’re entitled to your opinion) but I find them very interesting. Their works embellish and enhance the universe created by Frank Herbert. With the new Dune movie delayed until next year, this a great opportunity to return to that universe. A series should leave you wanting more. As I finished the last paragraph of the book, I was ready for the sequel! I think you will be ready as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Dune Saga continues

If you are a fan of the book series on Dune by Frank Herbert and those to whom the mantle of writing has passed since Herbert's death, you will want every book that is based on the story of Dune, its history, the characters, the societies, the kingdoms in power, etc. of the original books, plus all the historical accounts written about after the original books that flesh out and deepen this astounding tale.

I never cease to be amazed at how easily the writers capture and hold you captive page after page, chapter after chapter, book after book. If you love all things Dune, this book is a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid new entry in the Dune universe

A fantastic new entry into the Dune universe. This picks up in the year before Dune and details the personal and political struggles that led up to the beloved Dune.
The Dune universe is rich in story and opportunities for telling a new tale as well as fleshing out what came before. Having reread the first Dune prequels earlier this year, this book fits in quite well as we revisit Leto, Paul, and Jessica. There is also quite a bit of political intrigue that occurs on both Caladan and the empire as a whole. The Dune novels always had a complicated political story at the core and this continues that tradition. There is a wider story building in this novel and I can't wait to see what the next book has in store. We know where the story ultimately goes but the road to get there is finally being shown in detail.
If you are a Dune fan, or new to the universe. and are awaiting the movie, pick up this book and get started on the journey all over again. I can't recommend any more strongly for any Dune fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Fun Addition to the Duniverse

This new book in the long Dune series is welcome and fun. The Dune universe has grown evermore complex since Frank’s son, Brian, and Kevin Anderson have taken the reins of the saga and greatly expanded the saga; largely by providing much backstory. This volume provides some additional insight into some of the primary characters and creates some intriguing previously unknown side plots. Duke of Caladan ends with cliffhangers and strings left to tie. This book is the first in a new trilogy. They will be eagerly embraced by the long devoted fans that enjoy any new stories from the Duniverse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Addition to the Dune Saga

Possibly like a lot of Dune fans I didn't think anything more could be introduced into the Dune saga. I remember one fan make the comment that Dune was now a 'dead horse'. But this book proves that verdict wrong. This is a vital entry into the series, and adds significantly to our knowledge of the Atreides family, the cruelty of the Emperor, and struggle to overthrow the Empire. . It's taken a few novels, but Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson have captured Frank Herbert's style. This novel has a "look and feel" of one written by the Master himself. I highly recommend it.

I remember when i first read Dune (spoiler, not) I was so sorry when Leto was killed. He seemed a fascinating character, and i was never going to learn anymore about him. Fast forward more than a few years, here is a book (series),I was always waiting for!! I adore reading about Duke Leto (the just). This book is scrumptious, giving you much background, even on Paul pre-Dune. Thank you for providing such a wonderful backstory on the novel which help shape my younger years!!

It’s been four years since the last fiction set in the Dune universe was released (Navigator’s of Dune). But, with the release of the new novel, The Duke Of Caladan, the long dryspell has ended. Within the first few chapters the adventure begins and we get to see all our favorite characters back on stage. From the honorable Duke Leto to the sneaky Baron Harkonnen, they are all here. The only real downside to starting the novel is finishing it and having to wait for the next one to be released. One nice thing about the novel, for those that have the previous stories, there’s enough reference and linking to those adventures, but for those first dipping their toes in, they can get a good feel for who is who and what is what.
