How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Terry A. Hunter
4.0 out of 5 starsThe ideas of a wise human being
Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2020
This strong piece of fiction has a plot more true to life as we live it than the storyline of more typical novels. Sigrid Nunez has chosen to write about the kinds of thoughts about life and death that we all have but rarely talk about. I found kernels of wisdom and thought provoking ideas on nearly every page. My only disappointment was that there isn't much of an ending. The story just stops.

I could not finish this book. It is written like a high-school girl's diary. The author is not an accomplished writer in my opinion. The language is dull, and there are mistakes throughout. In addition, the point-of-view is entirely that of the author which made the book a chore to read. It might be interesting from a sociological standpoin,t but it doesn't catch my imagination.

You are in good hands (and good company) entering this world. Nunez is so skilled that her prose hums like a well-oiled machine. The story may feel similar to her 2018 National Book Award-winning "Friend," but it's not a rehash or sequel. At times this one does feel a little like a short story that got stretched and padded with a few digressions. In fact, you have to get in pretty far before you're sure what exactly the novel is about. But you will enjoy the ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sigrid Nunez does it again!

Beautiful stream-of-conscientious novel with references (that at least I get) to the 1930’s movie Make Way For Tomorrow to author Jean Stein and even Grumpy Cat about how all of us, no matter our life circumstances, are alone in sickness and death. My favorite chapter was from the point of view of an adopted shelter cat in an Airbnb but I loved it all.

This is a really good book but it took some time to figure it out. I was lost the first 50 pages then I caught on and it was great .. probably me and not the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A piece of art

It's an absolutely beautiful and strong narrative, that flows like a river, soothes you, and then it hits you when you least expect it. I like works like this one, which unwraps multidimensionally from a 2-d narrative. In some cases, just a collection of powerful observations, which work together to prove the point of view. The ability to be present in now is what makes the author so interesting.

Ms, Nunez writes with clarity in her unique at time lyrical prose. I loved every moment I spent reading this wonderful novel, which is is worthy follow up to her last book “The Friend.”

3.0 out of 5 stars A melancholy look at the end of a life, sharing what time she has left with a supportive friend.

What I did not like about this was the main character, who is dying, has to rely upon a friend from her past for support. This character lead a fulfilling and rich life. It's sad in that she knows her time is drawing near but sadder still, because her daughter nor any of her closest friends are available for her. On the whole, it felt unsatisfying. Perhaps it was too dismal for my taste?
At any rate, disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moving and intelligent

This meditation on life, death, live, and friendship is witty and intelligent as well as touching. The narrator's description of her own and her friend's thoughts and feelings as they wait for the friend's death seemed to express what mine would be, though more clearly and eloquently than I could. I valued the literary references and quotations, as well as the humor and humanity found in this piece.

...is that it ends. Sigrid Nunez is a treasure. It’s been awhile since I've given any book five stars on Amazon. But WHAT ARE YOU GOING THROUGH is brave and honest and true. It’s hard to write about death and not slip into cliches, sentimentality, or some other evasion, and yet she manages it.
