Choppy writing. Shallow story plot.

I was pretty amazed to read the good reviews this book got. Either the readers don't have much choice, don't read much, or they're family and friends. The writing is choppy. The composition is poor. The story plot is shallow and the characters are poorly drawn. Maybe the author was relying on the readers to know about the characters from Book 1. A very big mistake. Each book, even in a series, must stand on its own.
This was independently published by the author, which is just fine; we're all doing it. But the structure of the novel was nonexistent. There were no tags or excerpts from the praise it rec'd. There was no mention of Book 1 in the series. There was no 'copyright notice' page, no dedication page, no nothing. And with the large print (16 pt. font) the story/book is really only about 100 pages; a short story. Very disappointing; I quit after page 5.
