Shannon Mayer has brought, in my opinion, a game changer! This first in series book is in a class all it’s own, quite literally. PWF is a new subset in the literary world that focuses on women who are older, wiser, and quite frankly more bad*ss in their own rights. Shannon Mayer’s typical brand of magic and sass are found all throughout Midlife Bounty Hunter but with one key change, Breena O’Rylee is “old” 🙄 but don’t let her number fool you, after a jerk ex-husband ran her through the mud and left her with nothing she moves back to her childhood hometown to heal and start new. This time though, Breena is older, wiser and has no time for anyone’s crap.

“A woman of age has far more power and strength than anyone else. Far more than anyone will give you credit for, and that makes you dangerous. Because no matter how amazing you are, they will always underestimate you.”

I can’t wait to see what comes next in Mayer’s 40 proof series!

3.0 out of 5 starsFun but the old jokes have got to stop.
Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2020
Hear me out. I'm 40, and I appreciate a fantasy series where the protagonist isn't 16 or 18. I appreciate a series where the protagonist has some history and life experience. I appreciate a series where the protagonist has to struggle a little to keep up with all of those young things who haven't experienced the accumulated insults of age on their joints. I understand how, after 30, you rapidly run out of ducks to give (because you stop thinking so much of what others think and start thinking for yourself). I appreciate a protagonist who appreciates a little silver in a gentleman's hair, and thinks it adds gravitas rather than detracts from his allure. I greatly enjoy a story which is not only fun but puts the protagonist in that whole mental space.

BUT.

But, but, but.

The 'old' jokes and references to the protag's age are not subtle or infrequent. In fact, they're kind of a bombardment. I kind of get what the author is trying to do here, but I also think they could do it less overtly and with less emphasis on the age thing. The protagonist isn't old. She's not 80 years old and in need of a hip replacement. She is not, except in some unusual cases, close to menopause or hot flashes. She's just a grown-up who knows who she is and is comfortable with that. That's OK. Go with that. Let it speak for itself. And please, drop the menopause jokes.

So at first I wasnt into this new series it took a few pages. And once I was 2 chapters in I was hooked. This book had me laughing out loud and giggling like a fool enough for my son to ask what the book was about. Bree is amazing she is learning who she is again and she dont give zero ducks. And even though she is over 40 she is kicking ass and teaching these youngins a thing or too with her friend Robert. My hat is off to you Mrs. Mayer you have done it again. You made me sink into another world/series and love every minute of it.

It was an absolute joy to read a paranormal adventure story about a woman in her 40s. I absolutely loved this book. I was hooked from the very beginning. Breena is so much fun. She's a little out of shape and still a complete bad ass. I loved the world this book takes place in. It's filled with fun, magic and mystery. Savannah, Georgia with all it's rich history is the perfect setting to bring this story to life. All the characters are interesting. I hope that they have many more adventures.

Who says you can't kick ass after you turn 40? Certainly not Bree O'Rylee! She may be a little out of shape and popping some Advil, but she's kicking butt and taking names! Shannon Mayer seamlessly combines real-life struggles and the paranormal to create a fabulous beginning to her new series.

Wow, what a ride! Breena is such an interesting woman. When we first meet her she's still a little vulnerable, still hurt from her divorce and the abuse she put up with in that marriage. She doesn't start as the ready-made kick*** heroine we might be used to. She has to undo the verbal abuse and put-downs she had been hearing for the entirety of her marriage (and then even after her divorce from others). She had to come into herself and I love that we get to see that journey. She wasn't perfect, but who is perfect at any age? We're all just still trying to figure it out. So Breena was a huge thumbs up for me. The secondary characters were so much fun! Robert obviously stole the show. He was great. I love that he was her first friend. And I also totally love Crash. To me he was someone who could match Brenna intellectually as well as physically. Every scene the were in together just lit up the page. I was craving their interactions by the end of the book. Corb to me came across as a young boy. Maybe Mayer will give him more depth and he'll make more sense in later books. But for now I'm firmly on team Crash. I also love the friendship building between Feish and Brenna. More of that, please! And I hope we still get to hang out with Eric. He was so sweet! I look forward to seeing more of this crazy world. I hope in the next book Brenna gets her grandmother's house and that her ex-husband get's killed. Absolutely recommended!

You want to get rid of power to please Himself. Now, you need it back. You get a job that some don't want you to have. What happens when you think differently and you're smarter than some of those around you? You surprise them and yourself. Breena learns quite a lot about herself when she takes a new job and starts staying with her ex's cousin. Can't wait to read more about her.

5.0 out of 5 stars She’s ducking awesome!

She ain’t ducking around!

I love getting something new from Shannon. The anticipation of who is this person, what are they going to get into... what’s happening now, is a lot to look forward to. I can say, though the main character made me want to smack her a few times, I loved it. It’s different yet has the perfect Shannon flair to it.

Being 41 and having to get a new job is hard, no matter who you are. Old dogs and new tricks and all but for Bree o’Riley, she made it work. It was also a rude awakening for her. She was surrounded by men, who all thought they’d see her fail. Though some worries the old gal would get herself hurt. They weren’t wrong about the aches, it was a daily thing to have to pop an Advil... or three. (Something I do daily at age 40... lol)

It was hard, painful even but she did it. She trained. She practiced and she put her determination into everything she did. No one thought the old gal had it in her. She ducking proved them wrong. She made it to age where she had no ducks to give and let those younger jerks and the “trainers” for her new job lick her shoes. If not for her then no one would have been able to stop what was happening.

Her only friend in the beginning was a skeleton named Robert who became her friend. She made enemies and friends pretty quickly. Depending on her mood and temperament... she really had no ducks to give so it was a teatime to her ability to look, think and then act that kept her from getting completely creamed more than once. However... she put herself in the middle of something that could have gotten her killed... something I bet we will see more of later on. I can’t wait for more!

I love it, this book is life! No for real, hear me out. The story flowed effortlessly and held my interest throughout. It was funny and totally entertaining. Here’s the kicker, our heroine is over 40 and basically obsolete in the world because she gave her best years to a guy. If that doesn’t ring true to a lot of us. It was a nice change being able to completely relate to a character. Now add in a paranormal twist and we’re having some fun!

I also love how this book is helping to introduce a genre that is focused on the rest of us out there. The ones that are a little worse for wear and so much wiser for it. Midlife women. We may be down but we are far from out. I’m excited for this series and I am here for it!!
