Important tone and content for little ones

This is no ordinary children’s book. The illustrations, reminiscent of Jacob Lawrence’s liveliest scenes, are stunning and evocative. The author includes inspiring historical and contemporary descriptions of Black excellence, some of which you’ve likely heard of, and some that are not, but should be, household names. Farmers and sharecroppers, and proud, ordinary Black folk surviving extraordinary conditions are held up with reverence. I so appreciated that Cortez does not serve up a saccharine view of history. The harshness of our struggle is acknowledged, while keeping an undeniably uplifting tone throughout. Impressionable little minds will connect to the deeply hopeful and resilient stories of Black past, present and future lives. All the little ones in my life are getting The ABCs of Black History.
