What was the author thinking (or not thinking?)

1-star to the author for poor research. Folding aluminum canes? Timex watches? (I realize there's some reader dispute over the Timex watch references in this book, but it's apparent that Timex branded watches were not issued until the 1950's. The parent company, Waterbury Clock Company, was in business in the 1850's, but not using the Timex name.)
Another 1-star for the flat, undeveloped interactions of the main characters. All of a sudden, the H/h decide they're in love and get married. (All I can think of here is Emeril Lagasse and BAM!)
I will give the author 3-stars for the plot, although it was poorly executed. The characters are flat and completely undeveloped. Omitting the scenes of violence, it reads like a yarn for 6 year olds.
