4.0 out of 5 starsGreat-Designed Easy Installation, Ok Width, Very Heavy
Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2019
My goal in a convertible car seat was obviously, safety first, but also something that didn't take up too much space (both width and length), was easy to install safely, had a cover that could be removed easily for cleaning, and easy to use in the day-to-day.

After doing a LOT of reading and research, I ended up ordering my top 4 options, 3 that were in the $250-300 range: the Britax Boulevard ClickTight Convertible Car Seat, the Chicco NextFit Zip Convertible Car Seat, the Diono Radian 3RXT Convertible Car Seat, and one economical one: Evenflo SureRide DLX Convertible Car Seat ($100). I ended up keeping the Britax though none of the 4 had everything I was hoping for.

I drive a Hyundai Ionic and wanted a convertible car seat that would fit in the middle seat with a chicco keyfit 30 on one side and a passenger on the other with a tolerable level of comfort. I installed each seat I purchased in the middle seat next to the chicco keyfit 30 and my reviews are based mainly off of this position.  I hope all my efforts can help others.  I was not asked to rate these seats by any of the companies or sellers, my hope is to help others in a similar situation.

Pictures below of the seats are in the following order from left to right: Britax, Chicco, Diono, and Evenflo.

Britax Boulevard:I was very impressed with the ease of fastening with the seatbelt.  I didn't even try with the anchors because the seatbelt was so easy and is the recommended method.  It kept the seat impressively secure both in the window or the middle seat front or rear facing. A big downside was that the seat covered the buckle for the window-seat belt (in my car) so a third passenger option is impossible unless you purchase an extender which is what I decided to do (you can find them for around $20).
I am unimpressed with the cooler material option which I ordered as there are small circles cut out of the top layer of material and I can imagine it being a disgusting mess in the future.  I cannot comment on the actual benefit of the material since keeping the child from over-heating in very hot climates could outweigh the nasty crumb-hoarding that could happen.
It is tricky to understand where the indicator should be on the level when it is rear vs. front facing but once you figure it out, that's not a problem.
The cover removes fairly easily but there are a few separate pieces to be removed which could be nice if only a part needs washing, or a pain if all parts need washing.
The shoulder belt insert moves up and down very easily to adjust with the changing height of the child.

Chicco NextFit Zip:I had high hopes for this one since I have loved the Chicco Keyfit 30 but I was disappointed and expected more with such a high price.  The zip-off cover seems very handy.  The seat was very difficult to install and I could not get a safe installation in my car with it next to the infant car seat either back or forward facing.  The installation back-facing behind the passenger seat with the anchors was easy but I was not able to tighten it enough to be safe and forward facing I could not figure out a way to transfer the anchors to the back for use at the back (they are also only approved for up to 40lbs) and it was challenging to get the seatbelt tight enough for a stable installation.
The pro is that I was able to fasten the passenger seatbelt when the seat was positioned in the middle of the backseat.  It felt cosier than the Britax Boulevard but because of the style of the base and fastener connections, it kept as path open for fastening.
It is easy to change the recline, lever releases cleanly.  Clear instructions for leveling based on rear or front facing.

Diono Radian 3RXT Convertible Car Seat
I bought this one even though Consumer Reports did not give it a very good rating (their reviews at the time of my research were based largely off of ease of correct installation since that is such an important factor in safety).  They advertise as being able to sit 3 across and this is definitely a great option if that is a main priority.  It is very heavy, can fold up a bit for easier storage, and definitely has a lower profile as is clear in the photos.  It can take up a bit more space when rear facing so the passengers in the front would likely lose more leg space as compared to these other seats.  I really wanted to like this one enough to keep it, but the cover is much more complex to remove and though you can probably get a good installation, it just takes a lot more effort and time.  If I ever had to put 3 across in my car, I would buy this as a third seat. With three across (of the brands mentioned above) though, it would be very challenging to get it installed and for the child to use the in-car seatbelt unless you get an extension.

Evenflo SureRide DLX Convertible Car Seat
This carseat hardly compares to the others.  It is much simpler, but that is what I would expect for one with a much more reasonable price.  The biggest pro is the weight which is about a third of the others.  My sister-in-law has 5 children, owns this seat, and loves it.  Her favorite aspect is the ease of cleaning the cover and this one definitely is the easiest compared to the other 3.  There is nothing fancy about installation and with it in the middle next to the chicco keyfit 30, like the chicco nextfit and diono, it is very challenging to get the seat secure.  The width dimensions are similar to the Chicco NextFit and Britax thought the Britax is about 1/2 and inch smaller than both.  I will likely buy one of these in the future to use as a travel seat when flying due to it's light-weight and to prevent damage to my nicer every-day use car seat.

1.0 out of 5 starsSeatbelt frayed to a thread within 3 weeks of purchase
Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2018
Buckling my baby in after only three weeks of using this brand new seat, thank god I noticed the seat belt had frayed to basically a single thread at the very bottom of the belt where it connects to the seat. I don’t know if this is a fluke with just the seat I bought or some defect that might recur in other seats, either way it’s absolutely life threatening in the case of a crash. I returned it through amazon but will contact Britax with photos and video because this is absolutely shockingly dangerous. Photo attached.

5.0 out of 5 stars Save yourself the typical swearing, scrapes, and rage of car seat installation with CLICKTIGHT. AMAZING!
Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2017

We have 3 kids and 11 car seats. I've reviewed car seats for brands in the past (this is not one of them and I have zero relationship with Britax, nor am I being compensated for this review). That said....

...Clicktight is a GAME CHANGER.

The seat is good for 10 years, as good a lifespan as anything on the market. It installs SO MUCH EASIER than any other seats we have, with Chicco seats in a close second. The anti-rebound bar for rear-facing replaces a top leather and keeps the backseat more open (no strap to the floor from the top of the seat). I did have to put my weight into the seat a bit to get it to click down, but man....perfectly tight install with NO FIGHTING. No scratches. No bruises. No sweating. No swearing! AMAZING.

The seat itself is well made and the baby is comfortable in it. It's Britax, so you can assume a certain level of quality and this seat is no exception.

Installing with Clicktight took me under 10 minutes. My mother-in-law could do this with no instruction book and it would be a safe install. The recline indicator is very clear, too. If you change seats in and out often, especially with people installing who aren't car seat nerds (grandparents, babysitters), this is the seat for you.

I would still get on Facebook and find one of the car seat groups, and ask about seats with relation to the make/model/year of your vehicle(s) and ages/heights/weights of your child(ren). I also REALLY love that this is a no re-thread seat, so any child small enough to be rear-facing can use it without uninstalling it (just squeeze the handle at the top and slide the headrest up and down to adjust shoulder straps to the right height). Even the crotch strap can be adjusted easily (by opening the click-tight tray, then reinstalling...but reinstalling is a breeze so it's not a big deal).

We have 4 Dionos and yeah, they are narrower overall....but for my money, I love the ease and longevity of this seat. I can't even think of anything I don't like about it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware, does not work with small newborns as advertised.

This seat claimed it was good from 5lbs and up. Long story short, our daughter was born in another state. We had a 6 hour drive home from the hospital. Our daughter was 19.3 inches long and 6 1/2 lbs. I am a State Trooper and it is my job to verify children are correctly fastened in their car seats. This seat positioned our daughter in a manner that was not acceptable. We ended up having to go and purchase a “target special” (1/3 the price and worked perfectly). I am a fan of Britax as a product. They are extremely safe, but they get a one because their size estimate was not correct. Once our child is a little bigger it will get a 4 or a 5 star review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the BEST.
Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2018

I just installed and used this car seat with my 1 1/2 year old yesterday. I don’t find this car seat to be that much heavier than any other seat we’ve had at all. The smaller footprint of 18” in VERY nice, and it seems to also provide a lot more leg room as well. We have an older expedition and you could easily fit 3 of these all the way across. The clicktight installation is an absolute DREAM. When you have blowouts and vomit, or you need to remove the seat often, this is the seat you want to have! I found you need to release the seatbelt before you try and open the clicktight once installed, mainly because it is so nice and tight. The harness height adjustment is very easy. The loosening & tightening of the harness over my child is SO easy and I found that if you take a second and actually tuck the harness straps into the harness strap holder opening when you’re releasing your child it really makes a world of difference in both securing your child again and preventing the straps from tangling. I have 5 kids and used many seats, the issue of tangling is just inevitable, but this is the first seat that has an area just for holding the straps and that to me is super. I read many reviews about the short crotch strap. Yes, it’s shorter than a lot of seats but not by much and really, who cares? Just loosen more of the harness straps. Quite frankly it looks safer not having such a long strap coming up and my kids are huge-all of them. I have no issue with fit due to the crotch strap. The clicktight harness tightening is a bit unreliable, I find it clicks almost immediately when I begin tightening the harness but it’s no big deal, I just end up hearing the click a few times before I know it’s tight enough. It may sound silly but it’s nice to actually have the click sound. Regardless of how many clicks it takes to fully tighten, it makes Me feel better knowing and seeing that with each click it’s tightening another “notch” vs blindly pulling and kind of feeling around and wondering if it’s even tightening like every other seat I’ve had. I love the leveling bar on the seat, it makes it so easy to know that it’s level and you’re not trying to guess if the seat is level based on some silly “marker” on the side of the seat. My only issue with that is the words are in English only on one side of the seat, and it’s not the side I see when I look at my car seat. Lol. I had to go to the other side of my car to see the leveling indicator words in English. It does not have cup holders and I’ve read a lot of complaints about that but we must use sippy cups in the early years that no one else does because none of our sippy cups ever fit in any either built in or attachable seat cup holders. We use the skip hop around the seat organizers which have cup holders, snack holders and even an iPad holder for organization of all that stuff. I also LOVE that the seat padding can be removed without any harness removal, and it’s also nice that it is in multiple pieces because not all messes go everywhere and I can just remove the sections I need to that are dirty. And even if you have to remove the whole seat who cares, this thing is a dream to install and uninstall compared to any other seat on the market. Even though it is not recommended to wash the padding in the washing machine I will probably end up doing that at some point anyway. It’s not going to ruin it I’m sure, and the mfg just says not to if you want the seat covers to hold up well the 10 years or whatever. Use a delicate cycle. If you have time to hand wash I’ll bet this thing is super easy to do so though, but for me with 5 kids I am just not going to always take or have the time for that. No big deal. I wish I’d bought this seat a long time ago.

Absolutely love this car seat. It's so sturdy & well built, gives me confidence that my baby is safe. Seriously built like a tank, looks really nice too. Purchased for my seven month old after his Chico Fit 30 infant carseat was getting kinda snug. We could see he wasn't too comfortable so we upgraded & I'm so glad we did. It's worth noting that his Chicco would always make him sweat, sweat marks every time we took him out, his hair damp even if it was a short trip to the grocery store with the AC turned up high. We don't have this problem with his Britax!! We've taken long trips (about 2 hrs) & he doses happily. I expect to be using this car seat for the next couple of years, as he has so much room to grow! I've had it for a few months now & couldn't be happier. I recently purchased a second Britax for my mother's car. We're definitely a Britax family from here on out! For reference my son is about 20lbs in this photo & in the 50th percentile. If you're on the fence about this car seat go for it, worth every penny & peace of mind that your child is as protected as possible!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly disappointing and probably unsafe!
Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2017
Style: BoulevardColor: CircaVerified Purchase
So, we purchased this car seat earlier this year because it appeared to be well reviewed and we were looking to ensure that our daughter would be safe. We have been generally frustrated with the straps as they were difficult to extend basically right from the point we started using it; however, we have recently become even more disappointed as the straps no longer consistently lock when we strap our daughter in. This seems like it is a major safety concern and something that should be taken seriously by the manufacturer. We contacted them to see what the problem was and their proposed solution was essentially disassembling material parts of the seat and cleaning something with a pipe cleaner...not a reasonable solution for a $300+ car seat! At this point, I give the Boulevard a 1/10 as a convenient way to keep your child safe in a vehicle and I give Britax a 0/10 for customer service...

5.0 out of 5 stars So far, so good!

After realizing my son needed a convertible car seat like a week ago (mother of the year right here!) I did some frantic research and texted all of my friends with kids only to find out that three separate friends had the Boulevard and were happy with it. We ordered that one immediately and so far, have been happy with it as well. We opted for the ARB model because of the color choice, I mean the enhanced safety... The seat was so easy to put together and install. It took literally 10 minutes total. The seat seems comfortable and I’m happy that you never have to re-thread the straps as the kids grow, you just pull the head rest up. We have twins and there was no way I was going to buy four of these suckers, so we’ll have to switch them between our cars when necessary. I don’t anticipate any problems since they’re so easy to put in and take out. So far, my only complaint is the chest latch is kind of hard to get to to their chest (10 month olds) due to the shoulder pads and the shock absorbers around the latch. It can be done, I just have to check every time that it hasn’t slid down. These seats fit great in the back of my Acura RDX, they seem to take up about as much room as the Chicco Keyfit 30, maybe slightly less. Overall, I’m happy with the seat!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great and SAFE seat overall with minor cons compared with others.

Overall, great product. Great safety feature. What I was disappointed with (admittedly a little nitpicky for some):
1) The ARB does not secure to the seat. When the seat is installed in the vehicle, the design keeps the ARB in place. However, it's a puzzle to get it in without knocking the ARB off. My other seat snaps in, so there is no bumping it off before I get it in the vehicle.

2) The strap material seems inferior (rougher) to Britax's B-Safe infant seat (what he was in before the Boulevard). Strap materal also inferior to my other car seat.

3) I was expecting larger or multiple shoulder pad options. The shoulder pads are awfully small as they get bigger.

4) I was expecting pardding closer to that of the B-Safe. Boulevard has less.

Other than that, I really like the quality and functionality. Highlights include:
1) Click-Tight system works excellent and makes installation easy.

2) Tilt adjustment is superior to my other seat and very easy to use.

3) Seat height easily adjusts with a simple squeeze and pull making it easy to keep the height and straps in the right position. No need to take the straps apart and move to another slot every couple months.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bought this to replace previous Britax car seat because loved the 1st one

“Cushion” disappointing to say the least. Bought this to replace previous Britax car seat because loved the 1st one. But this one has no cushion between the cloth cover and seat. NO WONDER MY CHILD COMPLAINS ON TRIPS or being in it for any period of time! I feel so bad getting her in trouble for “complaining” until I sat in backseat with her n put my hand on her lap only to discover that it’s ROCK HARD!!! For the price point, I would expect more comfort along with the safety component. So now, I’m stuck with a hard car seat. I’ve been raving to everyone about this seat and now regret it cause if people purchase it, my recommendation helped them get a hard seat.
