Texas Jack
5.0 out of 5 starsAnother masterpiece in the Atlee Pine series, but . . .
Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2020
I loved the book. It took Atlee Pine out of her comfort zone, and moved her east to join an investigation John Puller. She and her assistant, Carol Blum were pulled off of her investigation of her sister Mercy's disappearance in Andersonville, GA to work with Puller on a case of national importance.

She has discovered the identity of Mercy's kidnapper, and he has a connection to this complicated investigation, as does John Puller's younger brother Robert.

This is one of the most convoluted stories that Baldacci has written in a while, but I couldn't put it down. Since COVID-19 had me homebound, I finished it in a day.

Baldacci may need to have a meeting with his proofreader, though. In the 3rd paragraph on page 204, he states, "A captain in the Navy was of equal rank with a major in the Army..." A Navy captain (06) is of equal rank with an Army colonel. On the 5th paragraph on page 206, Navy captain Gloria Miles states, "I'm waiting to take command of a Freedom-Class LCS..." An LCS is a Littoral Combat Ship, and the Skipper is a Navy commander (05). Nitpicking, maybe, but it jumped right off the page to me.

Do not expect the story line regarding the twin sister to be resolved. I despise when authors manipulate you into waiting for the next book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Did Baldacci Even Write this Book?

I’ve always enjoyed Baldacci’s books but this one is the worst...buyer beware. It veers so much from his usual style, I’m not certain he even penned this book. It delves into the world of the evil mafia and corrupt politicians and government agencies. And no, Atlee does not locate her sister, as stated in the publishers review. I will never preorder a Baldacci book again. I’ll wait for the reader reviews before I waste my money.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not at all like the Baldacci I loved to read

I am a big Baldacci fan. Have all his books and was looking forward to this one. I was so disappointed!! This didn’t even read like Baldacci! It was over detailed, repetitive,, slow moving, etc. In fact much of it seems like words filling the pages and about half way in or less I knew where we were going.... Also I agree with others the dangling mystery of the missing sister is trite and getting old fast-James Patterson tried this and his fans didn’t appreciate it either. I would hate to see the same fate befall him. Baldacci needs to write like he has before and stop with the “let’s just get another book out there” tactic-we’ll wait as long as it takes for a good read, or he needs to retire before he ruins his fine reputation as a writer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Filler between series book 1 and when the author finally (if ever) ends this story
Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2020

Book 3 continues the story of our main character's search for her twin sister missing 30 years (and since book 1). The actual plot and events is about 80 pages worth of writing. And to fill out the story to be a whole book lots of paragraphs about doors opening and closing, outfits people are wearing, and insipid dialogue are included. As always, Atlee Pine knocks people out with her elbows and is a vicious bad ass. She is not smart enough, however, to even think about using Google once she finds out her sisters name. The whole book is ridiculous and disappointing. And at the end, the story is not resolved. The story is just too thin to have ever been three books and now of course there will be a fourth if he ever decides to tell the ending.

I have read and own every one of Baldacci's books, don't expect Atlee to find her sister. This book starts fine but within a few chapters it changes direction to the point and never returns. It is full of characters, hard to follow, and not is as advertised. Where is David? Did he even write this book, I had to stop reading it for a few days to absorb how the characters were connected and what was the point of them, nothing. I am a book luver and read continously but I think Baldacci will now be off my list. Disappointed

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the Best

I’ve always been a Baldacci fan but I’m getting tired of reading about Attlee Pine and her search to resolve her past: to find her sister. I found this book tedious and boring for the 1st half; there’s more action later but basically it’s all too far-fetched. Attlee Pine is not a very appealing heroine. I just didn’t care about any of these characters and got very bored with the repetitive nature of the story. Save your money.

I have read virtually everything written by the author and have enjoyed the stories for years.

I had to go back to the previous book to even get a handle on where this began. From there, without giving away anything there were dual plots that served to push the story forward but did not seem to connect to each other very often.

The Puller story was fine but cliched. The Mercy story was certainly entertaining and creepy, but very convoluted. I found myself going backwards a number of times to keep track of who was who and how they were related.

At the end, there was an obvious entry to another story, but I felt like I had eaten a bowl of candy. It tasted good but was very unfulfilling. This was by far my least favorite book by the author. I kept going back to it because I wanted it to get better and less confusing. Bringing another character from another series into the universe was a good idea, but I just don't see the fine meshing of the gears that I am used to by the author.

I feel awful writing like this as I could never do what the author has done in his career and life. I will always buy his books and wish he would continue the King/Maxwell and Shaw characters. Those were awesome. This one was just a disappointment as I love the main character.

I am sorry.

2.0 out of 5 stars confusing uninspiring plot

I'm a big fan of Baldacci; in fact I order almost all his books. Unfortunately, this was a serious confusing plot with two main characters and several different plots. It looked almost if more than one author was writing the book. It was rather difficult to follow the storyline. I like twisted stories, but it was a little too much and I lost interest until the end.

I would avoid this book, but I'm still interested in all the other series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing for several reasons. Not worth $14.99
Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2020

1) Mixing the story themes of previously unrelated protagonists is difficult, and the attempt to mix two story themes in this novel is a failure.
2)The book feels like a slapdash mixing of two stories that should each stand on its own plot and characters.
3) Ending for one of the stories (Army CID protagonist) is far fetched. The ending is too sudden, and lacks the savoring that comes with a well written ending.
4)Ending for the other theme (FBI agent with long lost twin) isn’t really an ending, and is more a come-on to purchase the next book(s) in the series.

I’ll probably give the next two or three Balcacci novels a pass.

2.0 out of 5 stars Atlee Pine is getting more and more unrealistic.

Getting more and more unbelievable and unrealistic. Baldacci is obviously stitching together “scraps from the cutting room floor”. Pine has gone rogue from FBI protocols, never has to file reports or testify in any of the jurisdictions she has adventures in.
