I was delighted to find this title as this age group is often overlooked by teenage books. But I’m afraid to say I had to drag myself through it and found many of the games suggestions likely more suited to a younger age group? There was some interesting information at times. I haven’t even finished it. In contrast, an alternative book “Untangled” was full of relevant insights and tips, and I would highly recommend.
I rarely buy parenting books having been scarred by some baby books bought during pregnancy, but having heard this writer interviewed I liked how understanding and forgiving she sounded. The book has the same kind tone - like a very experienced/knowledgeable friend helping you with good advice rather than dictating what you should do. I particularly like how she helps you deal with ‘I’ve dealt with that wrong’ situations, and I’m left feeling I have lots of new tools and ideas to try, and it’s okay if I don’t do everything or do something in a specific way, because it’s not a dictatorial book at all. I’d really recommend it, especially for this ‘too old for sticker charts and just starting on social media’ age group.
I read The first book and now my kids have moved into the age group in time for her second book!! Again the author writes with the child at the centre but she provides a realistic approach to parenting. The author addresses the topics kids and parents face such as sibling rivalry, making and managing friendships to building empathy. All the while helping parents as we learn on the job!!! Looking forward to putting the theory and ideas into practice.
Really interesting, helpful and insightful book. I have found the author gives a great understanding to the stages of development and causes of behaviours specific to the age range and I've really enjoyed reading it and putting the games and strategies into practice. I look forward to reading the teenage years (in advance so I can feel prepared!). Highly recommend.
