5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent video and sound quality
Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2020
This is an excellent tv. Lots of apps (Prime, Netflix, Pandora, Disney+, YouTube and many more) and the Dolby sound and video are better than expected. We typically attach an external sound system such as a speaker bar, but that will not be needed with this tv. I am very surprised with the sound quality. I specifically chose a tv with Dolby video for the quality of the picture - and it is crisp and bright. It was packaged very well and we had it up and running in a few minutes. We are very pleased with this tv!

This was a prime day purchase. We noticed or TV didn’t survive our move the day before so at least the timing was lucky. Absolutely love it! I’ve seen some complaints about picture quality and glare. Not sure if these complaints were right out of the box or if they attempted any picture adjustments. Those are there to adjust to your circumstances so yes I noticed an annoying glare but was mostly eliminated by simply turning the backlight to high. Also increased sharpness but apart from that it we didn’t need to mess with it too much. So amazingly great for streaming with everything easily accessible with every app and then some we use already set up on the device. Also, very lightweight and easy to instal on wall mount.
The only slight complaint is the amount of time. 2 weeks was a long time to wait when you’re use to getting things in a few days and you do need to make delivery arrangements with Best Buy. Overall all worth it though for the price and quality

Amending this review less than 2 months after delivery. Yesterday some glitchy issues began with the picture. Started as a rolling wave (best I can describe) moving from the bottom to the top of the screen about every minute or so as well as the occasional blinky glitch. Crazy annoying. So I did all the checks. Plugs all secure, reset directv box, eventually reset everything including TV after confirming we weren’t having the same problem on others etc.
Now I’m trying to find some sort of tech support from Toshiba. The number provided online as well as on their customer service # is not actually theirs. This # will direct to a very nice but very exasperated counseling center who gets these calls all the time. So no help from Toshiba.
Next problem, you have now purchased a product from Best Buy but paid Amazon for it. At this point I have a 6 week old tv that’s making me crazy and no manufacturer tech support and now I’m outside of 30 days so no help from Amazon. Best Buy is sending a tech who they said would arrive this Saturday between 8 and noon. Then text comes from the tech asking for pics of a few things. Fine. Then they say they will schedule an appointment in 5 days when parts arrive? Okay... mind you they have not seen the TV, tested anything and they already know what’s wrong? How common is this problem? Anyway, I’d far prefer to just return it but that’s apparently not an option and the thought of attempting to find a replacement this time of year sounds like hell. I hope the problem can be resolved but it’s frustrating that you can’t expect something to work properly for 2 months. Definitely don’t recommend. Better off with the least middle men possible. Just go to a sore, buy a tv and get the con job service plan, better known as what you should expect for free when you buy something because if it’s not crap there shouldn’t be a problem

3.0 out of 5 stars Grrrr!

Super annoyed. The picture quality and sound is great. The remote is fine. So, why am I annoyed?

After 1 month of working great, turned it on and there was a message saying "Cannot connect to Amazon cloud". Huh?

Googled and found out this is an issue with this line if fire tv. Many responses said to do a factory reset. Um, then I have to reinstall all my apps.. passwords... etc.

I opted to try a restart. Yay! That worked.

Now, I see that the few apps that were installed has left me with next to no storage left.

Researched, got a 3.0 usb flash drive at 128g.

2 ways to format... external (can't put any apps on it) or internal (so you can move apps over).... easy peasy.... except it's not.

Doing the internal format the usb reads as 0b out of 0b available. So I can't move anything. Tried external... now it shows 128g of 128g, but not allowed to move any apps.

And speaking of apps... only ONE (a game rainbow dash) was even ELIGIBLE to be moved! Not Hulu, not Netflix, not Disney, not Tubi, not even Cartoon Network!

Seriously?!

TV with Amazon Fire is a disaster, slow to switch and terrible for installation. I have 2 other TV with Roku no problems, shows rewind if you miss a minute, this Fire TV is not fast and kicked you out. If you search for a news station like Newsmax Amazon will kick you out and tell you NO INTERNET. ROKU has these station right on their screen you do no have to search and the searching for stations is not easy on Amazon. I just went on my Roku TV and do not have half the commercials on News max and my favorite stations. I could go on and on never thought Roku was smarter than Amazon. Now I know Amazon does not like us to see some stations. I am a huge Amazon fan they get lots of money, I buy 90% from them. But their Fire TV stinks. I am also sad Amazon is to involved in politics they push to much black movies. I am an immigrant nothing against blacks but I love my culture I came from and wished Amazon staying away from politics because I am a great customer. This is the first product from Amazon I gave a bad review.

So had this TV now for a couple months and it’s quickly going to crap. Have a horizontal line that scans from top to bottom of tv at least 1-2 a minute. It likes cut through the screen blurring image. Moved from
Top to bottom. Just started within last week and seems to be getting worse daily.

I just switched cable providers but have eliminated that as cause as all other tv(3) are working fine.

Time to test the toshiba warranty I guess. This should be fun.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay Entry Level 4k with Glitches and Poor Speakers
Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2021

This is a good enough entry-level 4k TV for the price with a few problems. I’ve had it for five months. The remote just died and Toshiba is sending a new one. Picture is good for newer stuff that is shot in 4k. Although it has DTS-brand Virtual-X audio, the speakers and amplifier don’t sound great, even in my tiny bedroom. I spent another $249 to meet my desired audio needs.

Fire TV in itself is no big deal. If you’re already subscribed to HBO, Netflix, Hulu, etc. it’s only a convenience to have it pre-programmed into the TV. The only Fire TV I watched was imdbTV but it’s the same repeated shows for weeks and months at a time so now I hardly bother. If you’re an Amazon Prime member you can watch movies and shows on a per-view price of a couple of bucks. You can download other free movie/TV apps but I’m not very fond of reading privacy policies so I passed.

If you connect the TV to the internet and then disconnect it to use an air antenna alone, it no longer shows the channel/show information properly. A few times I would have to unplug the TV completely from the wall and replug it to even get a picture so the TV software has some bugs. Doing a full reset on the TV seems to have fixed both but I’ll only rarely ever plug it back in to the internet again except to see if there is a software update.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cheap but mostly adequate TV - You get what you pay for
Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2020
Verified Purchase
I purchased this TV on Prime Day 2020 and got a fantastic deal on it for a 55” 4K smart TV, so I will start the review by saying that this TV is a great value if you can find it for under $300. If you have more than that to spend, look elsewhere.

The picture itself is adequate for a panel in this price range, though you won’t be doing much fine-tuning with the FireTV interface used here. The internal speaker sound is decent also, though a bit tinny. The biggest issue is the HDMI ports; they are VERY picky as to what cables & sources they will accept. Your home theater/game console, media player etc may work fine with your other TVs, but this TV is either using cheap HDMI ports that are not up to spec, or is in desperate need of a firmware update. This is a real problem if you don’t have a ton of extra cables lying around.
Overall, I expect to get a couple years good use out of this TV for the couple hundred bucks I paid for it, but for even $100 more, you can get vastly better quality than this in a 55” television.

3.0 out of 5 stars Meh, you get what you pay for
Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2021

It's a cheap 4k TV and you get what you pay for here. Screen quality control is lacking and I noticed right out of the box that it has some uneven shadows across the screen that are VERY apparent when it's producing dark colors, so be advised this TV is not going to be a top-notch 4k experience. Picture quality over all is mediocre but more or less what I'd expect for a TV of this pricing range that didn't come from some big Costco sale.

Biggest annoyance, and to be honest I should have known better, is that Fire TV is just garbage. I hate being bombarded with advertisements and this TV is all about ramming ads down your throat. I haven't found any way to customize my background or remove sections I don't want or need, nor have I been able to set up a Screensaver like my Roku TV allows me to do. The worst part about this thing is that, for the apps you do use, they're super small and dwarfed by all the garbage you probably don't want on there and there is no way to change it. It's extremely annoying. I would absolutely not use this as a main TV. This went in my bedroom so it's low-use at least, but if you are looking for a main TV, I wouldn't recommend it. For those who do have it, if you want to hook it up to your Google Home so you can yell at your TV to do things like I do, you'll want to purchase third-party streaming hardware like a Chromecast, Roku or Nvidia, and those will also allow you to bypass the Fire TV bs that you can't escape otherwise.

If you're like me and you JUST want to be shown the apps you use on the main screen, and / or you like to customize the asthetic of things like background images and screen savers, this TV will not do that right out the box but obviously you can just add a dongle.

PROS:
- It's very lightweight and has a low profile.
- Gets the job done
- Shipping was faster than expected (and mine arrived in good condition so no shattered screens like a lot of other folks)
- Sound seems pretty good for just the TV but I still recommend a sound bar if you want better sound (no TV on the planet has "awesome" sound)

CONS:
- Screen quality is meh
- Cords are short
- Limited Hdmi ports (again you get what you pay for)
- Fire TV is awful and doesn't seem to connect to Google Home
- If you don't like being blasted with ads, beware, Amazon is going to blast you with a fire hose and you can't change it
- Very little customization overall, extremely disappointing
- They don't bother putting it in a box that hides what it is so it will be delivered in a big "IT'S A TV" box. Mine showed up 6 days earlier than anticipated so that might be an issue for people who aren't working from home. All I got was a quiet knock at my door and I'm lucky I heard it otherwise it would have been sitting outside all day for the world to see

3.0 out of 5 stars Storage full after a month
Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2020

I wanted to write a 5 star review immediately for this tv, but I decided to wait until I had the opportunity to try it longer than a few days. I ordered it on prime day and received it October 16th so I've had it approximately a month and a half. A couple weeks ago I started getting a notification about the storage being full. I don't have many apps downloaded on it other than the ones included on the tv, but I decided to clear app data and delete a few apps I rarely use anyways. The storage full notification stopped for a couple days, but it's back saying storage is full without me downloading any other apps. It's a good tv, good sound, setup and design, clear images and it's nice how I can edit the sound and picture quality. It would be worth 5 stars if it didn't keep saying storage full after having it only a month and deleting apps/data, but still says storage is full. I also bought a 32" smart HD tv fire tv addition from amazon and that one is doing the same thing as this one saying storage full without adding apps, deleting apps and deleting data, but still full. It still works nicely, but having "full" storage makes the TV's much slower. I don't know if there's a way I can add more storage so it stops saying storage full, but all I use on it is YouTube, Amazon music, Netflix, Prime video, Pluto tv and switch it over to my cable. Other than storage being full with not much on it and slowing it down, it's a good tv and I'd recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Storage is a major issue…
Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2020

**Update - June 2021
The “smart” side of the TV is made obsolete by the extremely limited internal device storage, 4gb. Most of the 4gb is taken up by software that is already installed by the manufacturer. I have uninstalled apps, as well as cleared data and caches but have not moved the needle enough to make a difference. Therefore I have tried, unsuccessfully, to use a USB drive so I can store apps externally. I do not have enough space to even update my apps. Unfortunately that means that once an app needs an update, I can no longer use it.

Original Review - October 2020
Unboxing and setting up the TV to my preferences was quick and easy. It has great picture quality and good sound (when it decides to work.) As another reviewer mentioned, there are some issues with the sound. I have a soundbar connected and from time to time get some bad feedback from the TV through the optical audio cable. In order to circumvent that issue, I've needed to use an AUX cord. When an AUX cord is plugged in, the sound from the TV gets rerouted to the sound bar - or at least that is what should happen, although it sometimes only works through the TV.

Also, the newness of the TV means that many, too many, of the apps available for download are not compatible with the TV. The result is that trying to use many of the apps becomes a frustrating issue. At this point, not only does the TV need a software update, but many of the apps need to be optimized for use by the TV. Until that happens, many of the impressive capabilities are irrelevant.

3.0 out of 5 stars Really good all around TV with a serious flaw.
Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2021

Nice picture, plenty of apps, great sound. My first issue with the TV is the stand. Two legs on the sides makes the required foot print rather large. The bigger issue is that roughly every 10 minutes there's a quick flash of signal loss or something where the screen flashes black and white or black green and red, looking somewhat like a debug or system screen. It appears to increase in frequency the longer the TV is on. If it gets much worse I'll likely have to return and replace.
Edit: The flash only seems to appear when using the apps in the smart TV. So far it hasn't happened to anything plugged into an HDMI port. To get around the issue I just bought a 4k fire stick and will use that instead. Basically buying a smart TV with developmental disabilities.
