Top critical review
Good, but could be so much more...

Been watching Top Gear since Series 3 (of the relaunch) didn't hear about it till then which is fine that is when it found its proper footing.
Sad to see it go but letting these three presenters loose to do their thing was a very appealing notion.
The Grand Tour, sounds like a promising title, touring the world sounds great. I would love to see them visit parts of the world and focus in on touring them and their car culture.
Sadly that is not what this is about. Thus far (written after episode 6 released) it is just Top Gear relaunch 2.0 and not much more. I have high hopes that this will be series 1 and 2 of Top Gear so that Series 2 of the GT is proper stuff.
They do nothing new other than haul a tent around the world for no purpose other than the studio audience. I find myself disappointed in those and the repetitious segments that are the same things they pulled near the end of Top Gear. They have such an amazing opportunity to go on a Grand Tour of the various countries, cities, regions and states that they visit cocking about and delivering some truly groundbreaking car journalism.
The fact that they did not do that, is why I am disappointed. The show is good if you were a fan of top gear, some bad bits and some good bits.
I would love for them to shake it up and do something new for Series 2. Take what I posted above and run with it. Bring back the proper news bit (or as close as the lawyers will allow), throw out the star bit, throw out the test track. If you must keep the track, use the local track to the region you are in. Plenty of awesome places out there with plenty of lap times from cars for reference. Bring more of what makes people love their cars and the history / culture surrounding them vs just the stupidity. Let that flow naturally from the 3 overgrown and fussy children they are :)
With all of that said, the end segment for Episode 6 (holiday episode) is just master class, exactly what I was hoping they would be making more of and just a wonderful bit of journalism and entertainment. You don't have to love cars to enjoy the beautiful cinematography, history, story told in a way that makes you care about what happens. Yet short enough to leave you wanting more, which is the best way any story, book or video can end.
I rate this as 3 stars because they can and are capable of so much more. If anyone if interest reads this, more bits like the GT40 segment and let the natural race / challenge humor flow through. Meat car is humorous for a few seconds but even Clarkson is above that. We all know their persona's are 'mostly' schtick so let them be themselves as in the glory years of TG. Let the journalism shine through and the natural humor of three friends find its way back in.
