A very interesting story from a very interesting woman

First, a disclaimer. I am not looking to move the needle in my own personal life. I bought this book because Shelley asked me to - me and a few hundred thousand of her closest personal friends.
Shelley Brander is an entrepreneur. She owns a yarn store in Tulsa with a significant online presence. She has a strong background in marketing and branding. She co-owned a branding company with her husband for many years. She is a very interesting person and her life has taken a lot of twists and turns. Shelley writes that she does not want this book to be just a memoir. Just reading through the table of contents, it’s obvious it’s intended to be a self-help book. Some of her readers have obviously been inspired to move their own needles after reading this book. For me, however, its primary value is as memoir.
Shelly’s writing has a breezy, engaging style. She’s had struggles in her personal and professional life, but she’s clearly a glass half full kind of gal. Also, she knows what she wants and will not stop until she gets it. That’s lesson number one.
I definitely enjoyed reading about Shelly‘s career arc, first as a woman in the marketing trade, then as a would-be yarn store owner, and now as a successful entrepreneur and professional inspirer. I think it takes a certain amount of ego to decide that one has something valuable to teach others who want to live their lives more effectively. I will just say in this case the ego comes in a pleasant package. She seems like a very nice (if occasionally annoyingly bubbly) woman, based on her frequent appearances on social media. She certainly knows how to sell things.
I am not convinced that this book can be used as a blueprint for attaining your career goals, but as I’ve already said, I’m not the target audience in that respect. I do recommend it as a very interesting story about one woman’s struggle to establish herself. She has had some excellent ideas for marketing her products. And she does not want you to forget it. Simply put, her greatest talent is marketing herself.
