Vince Flynn and Lee Child write a tougher protagonist. Tom Clancey had better plots. The ending wasn't quite as satisfying as the rest of the story. Why did I like this so much? The author is the real deal, and puts us in the head of a real warrior, the way only someone who has been there can.
Many of us have served, most in support roles, some in the combat arms, but not very many in the truly elite units. I've known a few. I've watched the Force Recon guys do pull ups on the water tower, maybe 60 feet up. Not sorry, not me, not then and definitely not now. I thank Clay Martin for his service and for a glimpse of what it was really like, because it's obvious that the book might be fiction, but the thinking is real.
