I discovered this author in 2020 on a gamebook forum, and started Night Shift as a Kindle unlimited read. The book was so creepy and intense I immediately ordered a paperback of this and her second gamebook. Both of those were amazing, and I decided this author is my favorite literary find of 2020 for her ability to simultaneously challenge and horrify the brain and create tension and terror and disturbing literature.
I was ecstatic to learn she has also written novels and so I immediately threw myself into The Misanthrope. This book puts you in the shoes of a dissatisfied high school teacher who finds going to work to be an experience of abject misery, she is growing more jaded by the day and falling down the spiral of despondence. She has a hilarious wit and conveys exactly what is wrong with western culture with her piercing and hilarious voice—an “unreliable narrator” for the modern world, leading us on aN enthralling journey that get’s darker and more twisted as each day passes. I cannot praise this book enough— found myself unable to put it down as I was pulled along on a journey into a madness of the very sanest sort— the unique madness born of being too good for a woefully sick society brimming with terrible people.
Victoria Hancox is without a doubt my favorite literary discovery of 2020, the type of author who makes you want to read everything she’s ever written. Treat yourself to a phenomenally witty, clever, brilliant talent.
