Main character has no interesting or redeeming qualities

This is one of those books where the main character is a complete A-h***. Somehow these books are a favorite of reviewers but it's a mystery to me.
**Mild spoilers** This character is not supposed to be a roll model but for 2/3 of the book he does not say or do anything intelligent or witty and often harms friend and family alike. An example of one of his plans is to make an escape impersonating someone and going into territory filled with people who know that person. After the plan predictably spoils, instead of exiting he carries on and goes deeper into it. Into a situation where he's also likely to meet an alien who's best buddies with that impersonation. And the aliens are presumed to read minds!
In the final third of the book, the main character upgrades to being just a jerk with snarky dialog that occasionally passes for wit. The overall story line and the other characters including the alien are cool though so there's that.
