'Mrs. Wiggins' was very mesmerizing. The dark comedy was filled with adversity, hilarity, secrets, love, and heartache. I liked the author's writing style: well-written and engaging characters, vivid descriptions, an interesting time frame set over decades during the Jim Crow era in Alabama, and an arcane wittiness about the main character's POV in her narration. Mrs. Wiggins, the main character, was something else! Overall, I liked the enthralling narrative.

When living a deceptive life things will not always be wonderful.. Sometimes in life things happen but how we handle them is up to us. Ma Wiggins went out of her way to create her own peace but not in the correct way. That led her to make decisions that ending up costing her everything she loved. This book was a slow read for me but it did get better towards the end.

I gobbled up this novel in no time. Mary Monroe set me up for the ride of my life. Two people whose lives are so different are paired together in a proposal that caught me off guard--a gay ma, Hubert, proposes marriage of convenience to Maggie, who just happens to be Hubert's lifelong friend. Why? So he could please his God-fearing parents, who has no idea their wonderful son is gay. Adding to the mystique is that Maggie agrees to this marriage, in which Hubert will continue to see his boyfriends, while they will find a suitable male for Maggie to have sex with so she could bare a child who will be raised as their own. Oh, but it goes down hill from here as Maggie tries to protect their secret as well as the one love in her life. Suzetta Perkins

The author's continuous flow of the story line was great. The first page captivated my attention which is definitely a plus. The book cover drew an attraction as well. This was a great, smooth easy read. It wasn't too predictable yet things didn't happen as one would have anticipated. Main and secondary characters all seemed to bring the story to life as though the reader was there. The timeline of the book was laid out very well as the author was sure to include settings related to every particular period in time as the years go by. Great book. The discussion at our book club meeting was awesome and may be a rare time everyone completed a book before the meeting.

Maggie and Hubert are not only best friends but become husband and wife. Not a traditional marriage but Maggie does what she can to protect her husband, have a son, protect him and all those that she care about. Understanding Maggie's early childhood helps explain the path that Maggie takes and the reason why she thinks the way she does. Maggie becomes accepted by in-laws, church members and others. After a few "bumps and obstacles" all seems just perfect.... until Hubert says the wrong thing.
