5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent prequel series to the Empire of the Bones
Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2020
I thoroughly enjoyed the Spoils of War which is set several hundred years before the Empire of the Bones series. The characters were great and I liked the way Mixon contrasted the differences between the two human societies - one dystopian (The Singularity) and the other where there is more freedom (The Empire of Man).
One Twenty-Four is a genetic clone of the Andrea Line - one of the ruling lines of the Singularity. She has been trained from birth to be compliant, follow the rules and not deviate from the norm. Unfortunately (or fortunately), One Twenty-Four is not so normal and allows her curiosity to get the better of her - dangerous in a society of conformity. Her life collides with former Imperial Marine, Grace Tolliver and she finds not everything she has been taught about the Empire is correct.
Spoils of War, overall, was an enjoyable mix of action and exploration of how different human societies interact with each other. As well as the dangers of not understanding different ideologies and cultures or the impact of the latter in shaping human ideas. Looking forward to the next book :)

3.0 out of 5 starsAn interesting twist
Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2021
Imagine two distinct lines of development for humanity, one which employs genetic engineering for some then oddities into a caste system a la Brave New World, and the second which pursues amore technology and cybernetics path of development while acquiring a social structure akin to that of late Victorian England. Now imagine a displaced genetically enhanced teenage girl having to make a place for herself with the help of a marine foster mother in the Victorian society.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spoils of War? or Privateer's booty? Good question!

I"ve been a huge fan of the Empire of Bones saga and just love how JThe admiral and Princess from that serie managed to kick some AI buttts.
But in this story, it takes places before the Fall and explains more about a certain character from the other serie known as Andrea 124 who happens to be a Singularity ruling clan. Who fell into a certain MCO on the run.

Terry Mixon did a fantastic job on writing from an adult and child POVs in character buildups. Ima keep reading the next installment to find out what's in store for them.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT insight into the Singularity

Not only is this book another example of Terry Mixon's great writing, but it fleshes out the background of the Singularity. It is quite a bit different from what I had imagined, and really helps enhance my understanding of the characters in the Empire of Bones series. My only problem is now I don't know which if the two series I should root for in terms of the next book to come out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow I am so glad to have been surprised by this one

I have enjoyed every book I have read by this author, so I purchased this one not expecting too much as I'm not always thrilled by prequels. At the start I was not sure how much I would like this story, then next thing I know I'm all in on the plot and will be waiting impatiently for the next book. Of all the stories I've enjoyed by Mr. Mixon this may be my favorite now.

Well written and edited. Truly unique. Well written combat, clear without excess detail. Looking forward to a sequel. Hope it's soon.

Grace Tolliver and her platoon of Imperial Marines are enlisted as privateers while Andrea One Twenty-Four undergoes her crèche training in the cutthroat atmosphere of a Singularity station.
The Marines and the twelve year old girl meetin the clash of war. Can Andrea find a home with them and can they fight their way back to the Empire? An action packed adventure that promises to be the start of a great series!

I was a little hesitant starting the book as it was so different from what I have read before. But it was blended together beautifully. I wish now there was a sequel already out. I will be looking for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never the Same
Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2020

Terry Mixon is one of those rare authors that finds a way to be original and imaginative in genre that has been around since Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein two hundred years ago in 1818. His latest, 'Spoils of War' is clear proof of that. Yes, we have Empire Marines; but the twist here is that these men and women are no longer officially marines, having given that up for the greater good to become little more than pirates. They may have given up the title of Marine, but every single one of them remain one in their souls. Plenty of action, plenty of what it means to be a young child in a world of genetic modified humans in training to become an elite member in that society. And the consequences for all when those worlds collide. Exceptional book, highly recommend and am definitely looking forward to the next book.
