4.0 out of 5 starsTracy is back and better than ever!
Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2021
In this eighth outing in the Tracy Crosswhite series, Robert Dugoni nails it again. In Her Tracks has an interesting story line, is nicely plotted and no lags in the pacing. It held my interest from start to finish.

After an extended leave from the Seattle Police Department, Tracy finds herself assigned to cold case files. She digs in and a five-year old missing child case catches her attention. While pursuing this case, she is roped into helping her former partner in Violent Crimes with a current missing person case. A runner has gone missing in an area of Seattle that also has two missing prostitute cold cases. This gives Tracy the excuse to work the active case while not reneging on her duties to cold cases. The story then winds around all of these cases and the plot lines nicely dovetail into an intriguing story.

I love this series and the author's standalone novel The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell. All are well written with great characters and interesting plots. I highly recommend this series and this writer.

Thank you NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for granting my wish for an Advance Reader's Copy of this book. I loved it.

3.0 out of 5 starsA good, rather than outstanding, read
Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2021
There is good story-telling here, in that the novel flows well. There is a nice twist too, just as I thought things may be getting a little mundane. There are two story threads but, strangely, one goes into hibernation before re-appearing in the epilogue. I still haven't worked out what I think of our protagonist, who displays quite a bit of selfishness at times. I did wonder about a couple of the details too (e.g. do you really mow lawns during the snow season? Also, one character refers to evidence before she is even made aware of it). Overall, it was easy to turn the pages and stay interested, but I wouldn't call the effort mind-blowing. 7/10

Robert Dugoni is a must buy, must read author. This stand-alone is easy to follow and difficult to put down. No editing errors, gratuitous violence or drag-you-down drama. Both cases are solved.

Intriguing storyline with descriptive, emotional writing that draws the reader into each scene. Surprise twists at the Nd. Realistic procedures, actions and reactions. The toxic leadership is something most can empathize with. Believable characters with distinct personalities and great banter. Thought-provoking and memorable dialogue.

I will re-read this story and always look forward to, pre-order when possible, new works by this author.

Ok. Another wonderful Tracy Crosswhite installment, read straight thru in one day. Several stories intertwined, detailed enough to paint a picture, and impossible to put down. It's good that the book was released while I was on vacation, because I'd have had trouble staying awake at work if I wasn't.

Great characters, consistent across the whole series. The descriptions of Seattle, Clearly Elum & Yakima remind me of the place I lived for 20+ years. And the story is compelling, believable, and unnerving. There are also a few unexpected twists that make sense in the end.

I'm ready for the next book in the series. Write faster, RD, (But I know such carefully, completely crafted works take time, so I'll keep checking...)

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite book of the Cross white series

I love Robert Dugoni's mysteries. Tracy Cross white is a fully realized character who has survived her painful past and used her experiences to grow and thrive as well as survive. Her grief is real and it fuels her need to rescue others when she wasn't able to save her sister.
This particular story is suspenseful, frightening and ended in a way that is positive without being contrived. It was the perfect read for this stressful, frightening period of existence we have endured during g the pandemic.

If you're reading the review on Amazon I hope that means you've already been reading the Tracy Crosswhite Series by Robert Dugoni. In Her Tracks is... I've list count... book seven or eight maybe. So start with book one Her Sister's Grave. The entire series is readable thrill candy! This latest addition is the best. My personal opinion is the writing during the quarantines imposed by the Covid-19 Pandemic gave Dugoni and interesting perspective into what is important and the role we play as members of the community. He even admits to learning a new perspective on how important books are to people, and the impact that reading has. In this book we see tremendous development in the character of our heroine Detective Tracy Crosswhite as she returns to work in the Seattle Police Department after giving birth to her daughter. She takes on a long stale cold case about a missing young girl, while navigating emotional challenges and career changes that leave her guessing about where her commitments lie. Her co-workers, the familiar characters Kinz, Faz and Del, are still active in the story. As usual in this series, there are two investigations happening at once. Crosswhite is recruited to help Kinz in his investigation of a recent abduction of a young adult woman from a running trail. The rudimentary, banal investigative techniques of reopening a cold case are juxtaposed against the expeditious, crushing pace of an active search for an endangered woman. Dugoni does a phenomenal job in two areas: Weaving the personal lives of every character into the pertinent action of the story and shining a light on the thinking process of both criminals and police investigators. Both are key things in drawing a reader in and giving them a front row seat to a thrill ride. In Her Tracks is a well-rounded, exciting police procedural, detective, mystery thriller. I recommend it highly!

A couple of years ago I ran across the series and began to read it. I read the first book in a day and a half and was hooked! I recommend this book to everyone that I know that loves a good crime series. Tracy has become one of my favorite characters. I wasn’t sure what was gonna happen when she had a baby and had gotten married if this series end. Thank God it didn’t! For years I have devoured every thing written by another author with my favorite character Alex cross. I became very bored with the series because I felt like it was very Predictable. But not this series! Just when you think you know or have a person in mind it’s Throws you through a loop. I cannot get enough or say enough about how brilliantly written this series are the ups and downs will have you on your toes and telling your self just one more chapter then you will stop. Well that never happens. This series is a paper turner. Thank you again for an awesome book. I’ve also read some of the other series. But Tracy has become my all-time favorite.

Detective Tracy Crosswhite has been on maternity leave and also medical leave for situational PTSD that was the results of tramatic events she faced last winter in Cedar Grove. She was seeing a councler and it was helping but it was time to go back to work. She knew that Detective Maria Fernandez had been brought in to help out in her absence but not that Nolasco has given Maria her job!

Tracy and her boss, Captain Johnny Nolasco, have had a "hate" relationship since Tracy went to the Academy and she knows he is doing this to make her quit. He calls her into his office and tells her that she was replaced since she had been off so long he didn't think she planned to continue to work!! BUT if she wants to work there the only job open. Cold Cases!! Detective Nunzio is retiring. Effective TODAY!! Nolasco wants an answer by the end of the day!! After talking to Nunzio, Tracy decides to take the job, at least for now..

Her former partner, Detective Kinington Rowe hears about a woman who has gone missing, Stephanie Cole. His"new partner"Maria is tied up in court so he goes to the Violent Crimes Supervisor to get permission for Tracy to assist him. Tracy is already starting work on a couple cold cases but takes off to help.

The area where Stephanie was last seen is the same area.where the two prostitutes were.seen in the cold cases that Tracy had started checking. Kins .and.Tracy gradually find enough evidence to focus on one house BUT Maria.has finished in court and Nolasco takes Tracy off the case. ..

Tracy continues.to investigate but now through the cold.case. She and Kins work.together without the.Captain's knowledge.

Tracy ends up in some dangerous situations but end up taking control!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dugoni Prevails Again
Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2021

Robert Dugoni is my favorite contemporary, male author. His Tracy Crosswhite series is fascinating, with an idealized but still realistic main character. Now Tracy is married to Dan, and they have a baby girl, so Tracy has a more complex home life to consider when making decisions about her professional experiences.

This book focuses on some creepy people, three middle-aged brothers who live together and might have kidnapped a young woman who goes missing. We also see Tracy delving into cold cases, and becoming successful in those, as well as in helping Kins with his priority cases.

Tracy exhibits intelligence and patience, both professionally and personally. I continue to be impressed by Robert Dugoni's ability to draw a realistic character in Tracy. He has accomplished the rare feat of giving a female character depth, bravery, intelligence, and maternal feelings. He is simply a brilliant writer -- mastering both complex plots and complex characters. I'll read anything he writes, and eagerly await the next Tracy Crosswhite novel, due out in November 2022.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lotsa’ mystery, monstrous characters, surprises and two cases with satisfying outcomes

Tracy is back to work after maternity leave, and finds that she is being reassigned to cold case files. After her anger and disappointment subsides a bit, she finds herself deeply fascinated with a case involving a small girl’s disappearance five years earlier. She is also asked by her former partner in Violent Crimes to assist in a current case involving the disappearance of a nineteen year old. Both cases have some turn of events that make the story rather intriguing. Some characters turned out to be monstrous when I thought they were upstanding citizens and one turned out to be a much better person that I had thought. Love those surprises.

The story held my attention from start to finish; however, it became much more intense as the tale progressed.

I liked this book because the characters and the dialogue are real. The scenes are also well depicted, and I felt like I was watching the whole story unfold instead of reading it. It is a good tale with shrewd evil plus a few surprises.
