Keller is always worth reading

This is a book that is both a theology of the resurrection (emphasis on resurrection and not the cross) but also for our cultural moment in COVID, racial disharmony etc. Keller also mentions his own cancer diagnosis.

Keller lays out the evidence for the cross, but in an end note Keller lays out his thesis, which is basically to explain how inaugurated eschatology (he doesn't use those words) is good news for us, and he at times specifically applies it to our modern world.

There's also a bit of biblical theology here, tracing, I would say various themes more than just one.

I would say this book seems aimed at new-ish believers, to some extent non-believers, and believers who might want to dip for the first time into biblical theology and inaugurated eschatology.

Should’ve focused on Grace

The focus on “reversal” is self-refuting, and therefore, self-contradictory. Should’ve focused on grace. BOTH the rich and the poor, the powerful and the meek, the outcast and the in-crowd, need grace. There in nothing intrinsically valuable in mere “reversal.” But these days, rhetoric gets the better of logic. As it is, this book is dangerously close to being socialism disguised as theological dogma.

I have read all of Tim Keller's published work (even the ones on church planting), and none have disappointed. I have to admit I was not prepared to have my mind and heart affected so deeply. It's almost as if I expected Dr Keller to have said everything that needs to be said and there wasn't anything new to be unveiled by him. The Holy Spirit is obviously not done with Tim, or with us. This book is much needed for our time and provides innumerable treasures that are easily missed in Scripture. Like Billy Graham said, "I thank God for him."

I have read many Tim Keller books and listened to countless sermons, but I think this book may be his masterpiece. It describes the essence of the Christian faith, found in the Great Reversal, the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Time shows how this pattern of decent before ascent, of death before life is the pattern for our lives as believers and indeed for the history of the world. Tim shows clearly how the hopelessness of postmodernism and the false hope of human progress through social engineering or technology pale in comparison to the hope found in the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the Great Reversal of human history that it portends.

I don’t even remember why I picked up this book, but I am glad I did. I didn’t realize I needed the message of this book, but I did. It is a thorough examination of the resurrection and the hope that it brings to all areas of life. So thorough and such a joy to my soul. I even bought a copy for an unsaved friend who needs to hear the truth of Jesus from the perspective of the resurrection (and this book.) technically I would give 4.4 stars but since that is not an option I rounded up :)

Life giving hope

In more than 80 years I have lived in a place of simple hope; hope that was borne out of a loving family, a small community, a simple church that was always there even when I wasn’t, people that I knew I could trust most of the time, and a country led by many (not all) good, well meaning leaders. Sadly, it seems to me that much, if not most of that time, has passed. However, into this personal void strides Tim Keller who so clearly lays out our deepest hope with such eloquence and conviction that he burns through the darkness of the secular world, which offers nothing but emptiness, and then lifts us again to offer the very real hope and encouragement so badly needed by our neighbors.
