Rare book with ending better than the story

I really like Michaelbrent Collings, so it is with sadness that I give this book three stars. The premise was intriguing and the ending was incredible, though implausible. However, I found too much of the book to be a long slog of repetitive action of being lost and in terror in the forest. Just too much of the same thing. In fact, the book started out with that, rather than building up to it. That put me off from the beginning. Then the story left the forest and began its actual unfolding in the real world. That felt like things were set right and I was starting to enjoy it. But then it went back into the forest for what seemed like eternity. I just found it boring. I also didn't like the asides by the author, where he talked to the reader. Makes the action seem that much less real. Then came the ending, which was totally unexpected. Fantastic, if quite implausible. Makes me want to go back to look at the ending again to try to understand it. Nevertheless, too much repetition and boredom gives this book a three, unlike the other fives I have given this author.
