5.0 out of 5 starsRemarkable Space Opera
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on December 15, 2022
Adrian Tchaikovsky is the absolute master of world building. Here, he gives us a piece of universe where Earth is gone, destroyed, but humanity lives on, inhabiting multiple planets. Humans arenโ€™t alone, thoughโ€” there is a variety of alien races, some friendly, some less so, and some largely incomprehensible.

And then there are the Architects.

The Architects are each the size of our moon, crystalline, and they appear for a single purpose: to twist inhabited planets into esthetically pleasing shapes, thereby killing the inhabitants who canโ€™t be evacuated.

In response, humans created the Ints, the Intermediaries, men and women who, after all the brain surgery and other changes, could travel through unspace without going mad, and at ho hopefully could somehow stop the Architects when and where they next appeared.

Idris Telemmier. was an Intermediary, one of the first group of volunteers for the program. Of the 300 volunteers, only 30 survivedโ€” the rest died or became incurably insane.

It was as Idris who, with two peers, was finally able to make contact with the enormous and alien mind within and of the Architect, to let make it understand that there were intelligent lives on the planets it was destroying, and to beg it to stop.

And it did.

But now, a half century later, theyโ€™re coming backโ€ฆ

3.0 out of 5 starsGreat story hampered by some clunky parts
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on January 21, 2023
Overall I enjoyed this book and will start the next one immediately, but there are parts that just felt ponderous and clunky, as if an editor forgot to take a look before publishing. I hate the character Olli with an intense passion. The Skylar of this story. The pattern of heroes going to new location / getting captured / then saved by someone was overused.

Overall, I recommend it to anyone who likes Sci Fi and space operas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great attention to detail without burying one in it

This was my first read of Tchaikovsky and I enjoyed it immensely. I liked the way the author wrote each characters thoughts and expressions in the way they would, rather than just a straight narrative. I will look for more by this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Adrian Strikes Again

Adrian's in-depth characters, believable aliens, excellent writing, exciting plot, and great dialog strike again. He has concocted a group of interstellar vagabonds who join together to face off against a threat that seems impenetrable. With his usual laugh-out-loud wit and a high level of detail without bogging down the plot, he has presented another delightful sci-fi romp that ends nicely while setting the stage for book two.

5.0 out of 5 stars An epic Space Opera
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on May 15, 2022

This absolutely epic space opera is without a doubt one of my new favourites and even though it's still only February I know it'll be on my best books of the year list.

From the prologue I was immersed into the expansive world as Tchaikovsky threw me right into action where I had to kind of piece together this world of humans and aliens and what was at stake for the occupants. Starting with Solace and Idris there were already two interesting characters and it only grew from there.

As the story progressed, there was one of my favourite elements of sci-fi, the found family, the misfit crew and their beloved bedraggled ship. Each crew member, humans and other species brought something unique to the story, whether in perspective, morality or motivation. The various alien species that inhabit the universe here were also fun to read about and got me thinking of the different ways that life can evolve and what that can look like - much the way that Tchaikovsky's "Doors of Eden" did. Each planet they visited was vastly different, though inhabited by humans (and others) and they were so richly drawn that I could've spent the 500 pages visiting different ones. But, there was much more to see and learn, much more layers to what is only the first in a trilogy.

The architects, the enemy, was hard to conceptualise in their vastness and purpose and I am still so intrigued by them and where it will all lead as the story progresses. The spread of humanity throughout the universe and how they travel those vast distances was also interesting without the need to try to make every little thing make scientific sense because ... well how could it?

Overall, I walked away from this wishing I had the next book "Eyes of the Void" in my hands to read right away because I need to continue on with Idris and Solace and the rest of the crew. I need to know the fate of humanity and the purpose of the architects. After 500+ pages I feel like it's just the surface and I cannot wait to continue on.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Wonderful Read

I could never get comfortable with the POV spiders in Children of Ruin, but I recognized Tchaikovsky's talent, so I gave this new series a try - and I'm so glad I did. Stupendous worldbuilding, an original plot and unique foe (with increasing hints that they're even more complex than believed). A really likable, compelling (and tortured) protagonist, as well as a varied and interesting secondary cast. The author is deft with his prose, pacing, plot and characterizations, making for a thoroughly enjoyable read.

On to Book 2!

Another gem from Tchaikovsky
This one with more action, faster and gripping, unrelenting cascade of events. Still, good development of chars, and even better humor. Highly recommend, hope that following books keep up the excellent quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book

I would give this a 5 star rating for story line and character development, but the editing was poor. Uncountable sentence structure grammatical errors was very distracting. As was the extreme amount of repetition of previously stated plot elements. I understand that some restating of previously related plot elements in a 600 page book might seem necessary, but this was way over the top. You should give the reader enough credit to know to go and back refresh themselves on elements they may have missed or forgotten. Not make every reader reread the same plot elements over and over and over, just to make sure no one misses everything you consider important. This shows a lack of respect for the reader's intelligence and is annoying. Having said all that, I still enjoyed the book very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great start on a new triology

This book was at first a bit difficult to get into. I also read a weird critical review beforehand complaining that the book was too "woke" due to its use of pronouns and at the same time misogynistic due to its asian amazons. I was half into the book and still wondering about that, until I realized that that reviewer probably didn't get that the alien constantly adressed with "they" is a hive mind, and I had a good laugh (and no, there are no asian amazons... although there are genetically engineered female clone troopers described as having the perfect female face... there are also ineffable clams. In fact, the book is very unkind to shellfish in various ways.). To be fair, all the different alien species and mutant humans are a bit difficult to figure out at first. I'm reading the second book now and it's much easier to read since I'm already familiar with all the concepts introduced in the first book. With the different perspectives and the story moving on between them, it really took me the whole book until I really understood how all the different species / mutants worked. But I really came to love Idris, most of all because he is anything but heroic, but ends up being the hero anyway. And Olli is my favourite character. She just steals the show every time. Go Olli.
