Thank You. I was one who had previously misjudged Mary Todd Lincoln. I was as guilty as many of her contemporaries were. You have helped me see that I was wrong. You helped me see the human side of her and helped me to sympathize with the struggles she faced her entire life. She really was a very strong person and we should be proud of her for being able to withstand so much antagonism and so much anguish. The one individual and the one group of individuals that I have a lower opinion of now are her son Robert and our Congress and Senate of that time. I agree completely with what you said at the end that if she had lived in this century she would have been looked on much more highly. I now have a deeper respect and regard for Mary Todd Lincoln Our First Lady. Thank You.
Although Mary Todd Lincoln is generally disliked, she is also misunderstood. She was a very strong woman who was well educated and had definite views and was not shy about expressing them. Hourly History had it right when they said that if she had lived 100 years later, history would have judged her very differently. She was no more extravagant in her clothes or purchases than Jackie Kennedy. I think her (May's)son Robert was a scumbag, paying doctors who had never met his mother to testify that she was insane. Mary Todd Lincoln was undoubtedly eccentric, but not insane! A good read.
Book gave quick and concise look into the life of Mary Lincoln. Love these books because they are reasonable and can be read in one evening. If the person is more interesting than I knew or if I want to read more about the person in the book I look online for other biographies that go into more detail.
I like the truthful and fair treatment of a woman in a difficult time! It was a war-torn country that killed hundreds of thousands of people, and her husband, and her dreams. The book is highly recommended if you want to get to know Mary Todd Lincoln.
Mary comes across as a severely troubled woman - living through challenging times. .... all exacerbated by the number of family deaths and - apparently - a compulsion to spend. A succinct and informative biography.
So many things I never knew about Mary Todd Lincoln. It was an interesting read, well written, and to the point. I wish it dug deeper into her marriage and her tragedies. For a brief summary of her life this book delivered.
