2.0 out of 5 starsAnti-Asian sentiment upsetting
Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2021
The story itself is good, paced well, and has relatable characters, but a line in the story really disturbed me--basically ruining it. In essence, people turned into vampires due to a "side effect of traditional Chinese medicine." The author goes on to explain that the demand for medicinal cures nearly a thousand years ago led to black market sales of animals, causing the extinction of different animals. One of these infected animals led to vampirism.

The fact this was published in 2020, when anti-Asian sentiment was at a high because of C*OVID makes the "Chinese medicine" comment especially inflammatory. I get the whole animal rights angle...that it's awful what we do to animals. That alone would've been fine without specifying "Chinese." Quite frankly, killing animals for medicinal purposes or other things is a worldwide phenomenon--driven by an equally greedy Western and Eastern market.

It's disappointing especially when, after looking at the author's social media, she posted in support of #stopaapihate. Does she not realize that normalizing the "blaming" of an ethnicity/race is only fanning the flames of hate?

Disappointed to say the least.

What a great start, to a new series!
The story is about Vampires and humans, presently, trying to live peacefully together.
Abigail and Reece meet at a gathering. They enjoy meeting and chatting. Abigail is from an strict Amish family, so she is careful, but, meeting Reece, has her head spinning. They both agree to try to meet again.
Sadly, on the way home a terrible accident occurs. Abigail is dying. A group of vampires arrive at the scene. The leader bites and claims Abigail and then Reece.
Soon Abigail realizes her life as a human, is over. She is invited to go live with other turned humans, in an underground cave settlement. Perfect for vampires, who can’t be out during sunlight, or they are turned to ashes.
Reece finally makes his way to the vampire settlement, with the help from loyal vampires to their leader. Abigail wants a relationship, with Reece, but, the leader, she has other ideas.
Abigail and two vampire friends, decide they want a peaceful existence, with humans. The leader doesn’t. The 3 friends leave the cave settlement, hoping for a new life in Los Angeles.
Abigail has had to leave Reece behind, as he hasn’t chosen to be with Abigail, but, with the Vampire leader.
Now onto the next installment- Crimson Storm!

5.0 out of 5 stars a different take on vampires

I really liked that Abi and Reece met prior to being turned. He is one complex guy with secret reasons for doing what he does. They are unique vampires who seem to want different things but do they? I pretty much love all things vampires so this book was a treat for me. Seeing them together and apart was sweet and sad. Looking forward to book 2 and seeing what is in store for them and for the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, unique read if you like this genre

Since I enjoyed Amy Patrick's other series, The Hidden Saga, I was eager to jump into this one. I was afraid it may not live up to my expectations, but there is enough suspense to keep me flipping pages. As with many books in this genre, some threads are similar, but Amy Patrick has done well to keep her story line unique and interesting. Just when you think you've figured something out, there will be a plot twist. I quickly read through this book and then the second. Now, I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the third one!

She’s it again!!! She’s written an absolute amazing book! I’m absolutely in love with her writing style! Each paragraph brings you in more and more to the story that makes you feel like you ARE the characters and are living their story with them. The only down side to this book is that it just came out and it leaves you wishing for more! It would be awesome if it was like Netflix where you get season 1-5 all at once! Because I can’t wait for the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Amy Patrick

I was eager to read this new series from Amy Patrick. I pre ordered and was excited when it popped up in my Kindle. I read it right away and it was hard to put down. From the beginning the characters are likeable and strong. We follow Abbi as she goes from a young Amish girl to a vampire and meets a whole new world on her journey. Amy Patrick is good at making you second guess characters and wonder if they are really as they first seem. There's a big cliff hanger but thankfully, the wait is less than two months.

I started this book in the afternoon and kept reading until I finished it! What a love story... but with complications that keeps them apart beyond their control. The world building is wonderful, but I would expect nothing less from Amy Patrick!

Amy Patrick has begun a new series that is stunning. Twists you don't see coming, excruciatingly evil vampire queen against first love, heart wrenching life changes, and the grandma of all cliff hangers. Excellent world building, well honed characters. This is ahmazing.
