5.0 out of 5 starsThe saga continues

The story goes on. For those who want more of the Dune story, the author does a good job filling in the details. Plots within plots and the beginning of murder of the Duke and the downfall of Dr. Yueh. Harkonnen treachery and the emperor's scheming make the book interesting. Of course it ends with all the pieces ready to move and the outcome uncertain, but we know how it turns out. Looking forward to the next book.

1.0 out of 5 starsThis book was worse than last one

While some have drawn a line between the original and the new, I find several of the new ones enjoyable like the House series. But these two authors need to let someone else take over. They are blatantly writing for money now. A planet called Elegy is ridiculous and out of place in planet names. Everything is predictable including the foiled plots and the foiled spy rings. The commonwealth rebellion is boring. The Harkonen are laughable. The whole book is a big set up to the next one but it is more a small predictable fizzle. Yawn of yawns.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another amazing Dune prequel
Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2021

I’ve loved the Dune books for decades. I’ve read each sequel and prequel as they’ve released. Some more than once. I’m pretty sure I’ve read Dune at least 15 to 20 times throughout the years.

So now the 2021 movie has been released and it was more than I could have imagined. It was odd to read The Lady of Caladan picturing all the characters of the movie. Just an interesting side note.

DTLoC continues the Dune Caladan trilogy with Jessica trapped with the Bene Gesserit sisterhood. This prequel takes place about a year before Dune takes place so it’s interesting to see the backstory of the characters.

I really enjoyed the first two books in this trilogy and can’t wait until the final book is released. I sure hope the authors continue writing in the Dune world. I just can’t seem to get enough!

I surmise that the authors feel no embarassment about how far they are from manifesting either the vision or the craft that Frank Herbert imparted to his original trilogy. I have read ALL the derivative efforts to date that have been put out to capitalize on his genius. All have been somewhat sophomoric but I have continued to hope that they would get better over time. I barely made it through the first of the Lady of Caladan books and only bought the second because of my excitement over the forthcoming movie. It is hard to imagine but the writing and plotlines are only getting worse. Do the authors and the editors ever read the dialogue out loud? I guess that they are maximizing some function that is based on royalties/effort and have realized that people will buy any Dune book out of habit. I stopped reading this one about 10% through it -- I cant take it anymore and will just go back to rereading the originals ever five years or so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good addition to the series

I've read every one of the Dune books and have really enjoyed them all. This book continues the saga of Lady Jessica the mother of Paul Atreidies. It is the set up for the next book when Jessica should be able to return to her beloved Duke Leto and her son. This book also gives more information on the working of the Bene Gesserit and their control of others.

Over the decades , I've read all the books in the Dune saga so my enjoyment of this installment was not unexpected . There were no surprises or big reveals just a continuation and evolution of the Dune story started so very long ago . I do wonder what will happen after the next book which will presumably bring us to an end - - new Dune connected to old Dune . If it is the end , Dune will be missed .

This volume of the trilogy has intrigue and schemes galore. I like the way that many of the history behind the feuds between the different Houses and with the Imperium is being laid out. There is much to be resolved in the final volume to this pre-Dune trilogy to bring the main characters to their status at the start of Dune itself

House Atreides, House Corrino, House Harkonnen all.were very enjoyable but this prequel was definitely the most entertaining and begins to show what led to the Atreides taking over Arrakis. Looking forward to.the continuation of this story...

Not sure I accept this installment in the history of Dune based on the events chronicled in Dune itself. Seemed repetitive and dragged in places. I will see how the third installment brings the story back in line.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book 2 and boy it is worth it!

Such a good part 2 to The Duke of Caladan. This book splits its focus between Lady Jessica, Duke Leto, Paul and multiple antagonists, all of which are major players to the plot line of the story. This is the second book I've read in the Brian Herbert and Keven J. Anderdson "Dune" line and as much negative reviews as I have heard over the years about their treatment of the Dune universe, this book and its predecessor were very enjoyable! Very much recommend!
