The night stockers by Kristopher Triana and Ryan Harding was a wild, sick, blood soaked, splatter punk ride! If you've read the store by Bentley Little and enjoyed it, I recommend this one. It's like the store on speed! Fresh way supermarket has a new rival in town, in fact they are right across the street. Devil's food. A grocery store which is run by satanists. They don't want to beat the competition, they want to kill it...literally. this story is an extreme horror fans playground. I'll just use some descriptive words instead of a synopsis: death metal, mullets, dismemberment, blood orgies, a chainsaw, mutilation, knives, katanas, drawn and quartered, motorcycles, chains, pentagrams, and one ass kicking granny! There were more fatalities than a night of playing mortal kombat with your friends. Also, this story is set in 1992, so anyone nostalgic for the 90's will really enjoy all of the references. I highly recommend to extreme and splatter punk fans! 5 star brutality!
It's Clerks meets Assault On Precinct 13. It's Intruder meets The Warriors. It's Dawn of the Dead meets Rosemary's Baby. It's none of those things because it's altogether too original to be classified that easily. I'm talking about The Night Stockers by Triana and Harding, a true masterpiece of absurdity and gore. Freshway is struggling now that Devil's Food has opened up across the road, stealing customers as well as some of the staff. In a desperate, albeit transparently futile, attempt to combat the erosion of the bottom line, Todd demands that most of this Freshway staff work an unexpected overnight shift for deep cleaning and stocking. A miserable night is soon to become altogether worse as the Freshway staff learns that competition between grocery stores can not only be fierce, it can be deadly. It stands to reason something like that would have to happen when the Devil's Food chain is owned and operated by Satan. Fueled by a desire to live up to the expectation of his dark lord--and his petty impulse to seek vengeance against the Freshway manager who helped drive him to the dark embrace of Devil's Food--Desmond decides he and his staff will be destroying the competition. Of course, even with Satan on his side, Desmond and his crew of miscreants might have a bit more on their plate than he could anticipate. Equal parts an homage to death metal of the late 80s and early 90s and the early days of splatterpunk horror, the authors create a world that feels entirely real so that they can do the most unreal and unspeakable things to the people populating that world. Drawing from their own experiences working in retail during that period as well as their lasting appreciation for the music that finds itself repeatedly referenced throughout the narrative, Triana and Harding successfully bring the world of Freshway to life--for the express purpose of converting it into a funhouse of death and dismemberment. Filled to the brim with graphic sex and violence, often in tandem, The Night Stockers becomes a barrage of viscera and perverse humor that remains constant from the first to the final page.
I love Splatterpunk when it is done well. “The Night Stockers” was a fantastic blood bath.
“The Night Stockers” is a story about two competing grocery stores. Freshway is doing well until Devil’s Food moves into town and encroaches on their sales. Todd, the manager of Freshway, decides he wants all employees to work the night shift and clean the store. He wants a complete overhaul so they can launch a grand reopening and boost sales.
Devil’s Food is run by former Freshway assistant manager, Desmond. As we can guess from the name, this store is anything but ordinary. The employees are metal head, orgy loving, devil worshiping freaks who want to take out the competition. Let the blood bath begin....
“The Night Stockers” is an action packed, gore filled thrill ride that will get your blood pumping. The authors infused humor into this intense book, which was refreshing. It definitely has that 90’s nostalgia too. Let me warn you, this book is hardcore Splatterpunk and not for unseasoned horror readers.
When this book was announced, I was beyond excited. 2 big names in the extreme horror genre and a story about 2 competitive grocery stores practically going to war with each other. Fresh Way vs Devil's Food. Bound by Satan, Devil's Food aims to not only kill the competition, but to annihilate it in the name of their Dark Lord. What's not to like? This book is full throttle insanity. Death metal blaring atrocity after atrocity. You either fight for your life or you will be killed, simple as that.
With Harding and Triana, you know the gore will be heaped on and the blood will spill. The characters, both good and bad, are slowly whittled down and only the strongest will survive the night.
Working at Walmart myself, it's fun to read all the familiar lingo. You can really tell that these writers have been through the same retail BS that I have and this is their way of exercising those experiences. By far, this is the most fun I've had reading a book in a looong time. And I know it's still early but I think it'll be one of the best books of the year.
Novel functions beautifully as a splatterpunk work, dark comedy, and a nifty 80's/90's throwback. AND if you ever worked in a grocery store, there's even more nuggets for you. Deliciously violent and full of great puns and references. It would have been really easy to screw up a novel that tried to do this much but Harding/Triana pull it off beautifully!!!!!! Well worth the purchase price!!!!!!!
Welcome to the Show, folks! I mean that in the best way possible. Freshway Grocery store is about to be put out of business by the meanest grocery store around! Devils Food, a chain that is literally being run from the bowels of Hell, is willing and able to do more than cut the competition. The group of Satanists that run it, are cruel, depraved, perverted and lusting for blood, and fresh meat. Trust me, Karen, you do not want to speak to this manager!
Freshway quickly becomes a bloody battleground as the Devil’s Food employees quickly lay waste to their defences. It’s a fight to the death for the next employee of the month, in this frenzied fury of bloodlust and hilarious overkills. 4 stars for sick, gory, fun.
These two authors need to collaborate more because this book was awesome AF. Over the top violence, gratuitous sex, ruthless execution of characters, and a messed up plot make NIGHT STALKERS, a throwback to the 90s Splatter Punk era of storytelling. Lately I have noticed a huge resurgence of this sub genre of horror. Sex, drugs, and rock N roll, not too mention the graphic death scenes leave this novel drenched in blood! Pray for morning…
I've never read anything that could be considered "splatter punk". The horror I like tends to be paranormal/supernatural (like haunted houses and vampires), I don't need a reminder of how cruel humans can be to one another. The thing is, I've also worked retail for years and I was curious about this story since it focused on retail. I really can't think of any book that focuses on retail workers in a retail setting, so I took a chance.
And wow! This ultra gory, ultra violent book is a ton of fun! It feels weird describing it that way considering all the death, destruction, and Satanisim, but it's completely true! It's also really well written, something I didn't anticipate.
At the heart of this book it's a slasher that I found very funny and entertaining. I highly recommend.
I'm in my second grocery job, and can tell they know what they are talking about. Just have two things to say. One, a character is introduced in about chapter 13, I believe was there all along and many people had seen him, but no one thought to acknowledge him till now. He definitely stood out, even amongst the eccentricly dressed others. There is a very slight hint at a possible sequel involving this character at the end. But a better one in my opinion, would be if when the ambulance is driving off the radio gets switched on to some death metal. Just a thought. It's fine as is. I'm just glad it was well edited. Don't think there were many typos at all. Three, if that many. Solid book. Read it.
