Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 4, 2021
The first picture book biography of the man who is referred to as "America's Doctor" provides a short but concise outline of the life of Anthony Fauci, M.D., from his childhood as a gifted boy working, being schooled, and living in Brooklyn, New York. All four of his grandparents were immigrants from Italy. The son of a pharmacist, young Anthony delivered prescriptions to his father's patients using his blue Schwinn bicycle. He was the smallest boy on his high school basketball team, but he was such a tenacious and courageous player that he was elected captain of the team by his peers. He excelled academically in all of his schooling including receiving his medical degree from Cornell University. He quickly rose to prominence in the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Author Kate Messner bases her biography upon interviews with Dr. Fauci himself. The best part of this book is the back or end matter that greatly enhances the main narrative. The latter includes a personal timeline of Dr. Fauci's childhood, education, and life work. There is more scientific data as well such as an explanation of how vaccinations work and the great medical researcher's tips to today's youth about how to become a scientist. This is a fine beginning point to engage in research and study of one of the world's most notable figures living today. The only question that remains is why has this great man has not received the Nobel Prize for Medicine. The book does not document the following, but advertising for the book and online profiles of Dr. Fauci note that he has worked closely with seven U.S. Presidents beginning with Ronald Reagan. Alexandra Bye's digitally-rendered illustrations add significantly to the enjoyment of this introductory biography of a giant American scientist and patriot.
